Here's the Cashbox US Top 5 singles from this week, 1969:

Tommy Roe - Dizzy
(song starts @ 40s)

Creedence Clearwater Revival - Proud Mary

Foundations - Build Me Up, Buttercup

1910 Fruitgum Co. - Indian Giver

Jay & Americans - This Magic Moment

I had never heard "Dizzy" nor "Indian Giver".

And then, way down at #80 is MC5 - Kick Out The Jams

I only knew “Indian Giver” because the Ramones covered it. Didn’t know it was a cover, though.

And I only knew of “Kick Out the JAMs” because of Robert Anton Wilson.

yikes i’m old. this stuff was on the radio when I was in junior high school.

tommy roe and 1910 fruitgum were big bubblegum bands. 1910 were also the author’s of “yummy yummy yummy I got love in my tummy”. nuff said.

the key change thing in “dizzy” is actually kind of hip. it’s built right into the form. god’s own snare drum sound on that tune.

ccr are so freaking perfect at their particular thing.

rip rob tyner and sonic smith. mc5 were freaking ferocious. detroit doesn’t get a lot of love when folks think about rock, but all the detroit bands kicked everloving @ss.
