What a fantastic shot. The sky in New York is almost never anything but a “lovely” shade of gray. The occassional sun ray breaks the smog and angers some and gives nostalgia to others – nostalgia for what? living in a trailer park in upstate new york? maybe. who knows. I just read through your Merlefest blogs… terrrrrific! Great photos – wish i had gone. In september – one of the events of the New Yorker Festival was Steve Martin hosting Earl Scruggs, Tony Ellis, Pete Wernick, Charles Wood, and a few others… it was incredible. After the show I met up with the old Eiffeler Mark, and we caught the second half of the Katrina benefit at Town Hall.

I decided to pick up the Banjo myself – taking lessons with Tony Trischka, know him? At any rate, here’s to you! (sip sip sip!)

there’s a psychedelic bluegrass band from the Ithaca area called The Horseflies, and they do a song called “I Live Where It’s Gray”; it has such lines as “I will never marry a blonde woman” and “I’ve got legs as white as priests”. good song. there’s a bluegrass fest up there every year (Trumansburg?) – not quite as big as Merlefest, but i rememebr standing in the rain watching the Horseflies, 10,000 Maniacs, Donna the Buffalo, etc.. good times :)

after 8 years of the sunny south, i miss that nice solid-gray NY sky. and i miss the gray ice on the side of the road.

we just got our Merlefest tix for this year. rock.

    cheers.
