Welcome To The Dis-occupation

I now have, in the words of the polite HR rep, roughly 10 weeks before I become "severance-available".

In other words, I've been told I get to take the summer off with pay, and I don't have to come back in the fall.

That sucks, but could be worse, I guess. Can you take another job and still collect that pay?

I’m sorry if this isn’t what I’m supposed to say, but congratulations!

I mean, I know this is the worst time in our lifetimes to be looking for work and all that, but dude, you got severance! You get paid time off! And even if that wasn’t the case, there’s something great (and terrible) about being forced to change our lives. Good luck, and may you find new work no sooner than you want it.

The summer off on full pay? Well done Cleek. Over here you tend to get a month’s ‘garden leave’ on full pay before you’re out. The actual redundancy package depends on years of service and how generous your company is. Nortel laid off a load of UK staff last month and DIDN’T PAY THEM A PENNY. Nothing at all. Whoa.

So, still want to work for The Man or are you going to strike out on your own this time? Perhaps it’s time to have a mid-life and work as a session musician. :)

pretty much, yeah. i’m there till mid-July, then it’s hammock-and-flip-flops time.

they were good to me on the severance – much better than i had expected. gotta give em that.

    next? beats me.

if you ever want to think twice about relocating up this way let me know, i have some graphics-related contacts i could point you toward.

in any case, looks like you’re headed for a cool summer!
