Just for recordkeeping

I wrote this little poem a couple of months ago in a thread about the poem read at Obama's inauguration. I'm putting it here so I can find it if I ever want to read it again.

Feel free to ignore this post.

i was convinced, nearly, by her reading
that verse so free has no business
being read aloud. being considered poetry.

only she can, didn't, say why
the text she read was not prose,
read haltingly with discordant accents.

if i sound like prose
played by a machine
with slipping gears
and mistuned reeds,
am i a poem at all?

shouldn't i transcend in construction,
exceed in precision, prose ?
if not, why package me as "poem" ?
