I just figured out that I'm one state away from having visited every coastal state in the continental* US.
I'll get to Mississippi some day. Probably.
* - where "continental" = "contiguous", as it commonly, though confusingly, does.

Alaska doesn’t count?
continental.
(odd how Alaska doesn’t get included in that designation…)
That word you’re looking for is “contiguous”.
there are things i look up, and things i don’t look up. this one, i looked-up.
Continental US:
The continental United States commonly refers to the 48 contiguous states located on the central part of the North American continent, plus the District of Columbia, and so does not include Alaska and Hawaii.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] Because Alaska is also on the North American continent, the term, if interpreted literally, would also include that state, so the term is sometimes qualified with the explicit inclusion or exclusion of Alaska to resolve any ambiguity.[2][8] This ambiguity existed long before Alaska became a state in 1959.[9]
Likewise, UPS distinguishes “continental” from AK and HI; NASA; US Military dictionary.
Simple fix for the confusion: give Alaska to Canada, and then you wont have to worry about it
or, annex Canada!
So what are the rules for “visited” here? For example, I have driven across Oregon north to south, but didn’t stay overnight, does that count? I assume stopovers in airports don’t either? Not that there have to be rules, mind you.
drive-thrus count, layovers while flying too
TX, MI – layover
SC, DE, MA – drive-thru
Well let’s see, under those rules I been: Washington, California, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada, Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri, Louisiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Hawaii, Maryland, DC, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts.

Nice! In looking at it, I realized that I forgot to include Colorado on the list (all those square states look the same to me).
added CO.
