The shrine that was attacked in Bangkok is directly in front of the Bangkok Grand Hyatt hotel. When we were in Thailand last fall, two of our party of six stayed there. 
In other words... I've been to that spot. What a strange feeling. I have no doubt that it's much better to have my 'strange feeling' than to have whatever the people directly affected by that explosion are going through, however.
Had the same experience as you, only it was Marrakesh in Morocco.
