I don’t know where else to put this (apart from private conversations with people who feel the same), but RIP Robbie Robertson. I loved the Band, I loved the Last Waltz, and I loved what he said to the person who said in surprise “Bill Clinton takes your calls?” “Yup, he’s a southern boy who wanted to be a rock star, and I wrote The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, of course he takes my calls.”

The Band were remarkable, not least because of all of Robertson’s songs. A lot of folks have tried to cop their thing over the years, but they were so fresh and original when they began working as The Band.

Fresh and original, and also timeless.

R.I.P. Robbie. I think Garth Hudson is the last man standing from that outfit. :(
