Wonderful! Thanks. My faves.
I and my folks moved to a suburb south of Alexandria (VA) in ’51 when I was 8; the road to civilization was the George Washington Parkway, a WPA 4-lane running to Mt. Vernon. Thick with big trees, and rife with dogwoods and azaleas; plus my dad was a Johnny Appleseed of same, planted slews of them at the new church in McLean, and tried to do the same in his retirement community until forestalled.
There were 2 or 3 dogwoods that had both white and pink boughs of blossoms which remain with me as archetypal ideals.
Also I went to a boarding school in Florida N. of Orlando, on the grounds of a 20’s steel magnate’s estate. Azaleas and poinsettias 12 feet high lined all the roads. Whatta way to go.
So thanks.
there are still lots of dogwoods and wild azaleas in NC, though i fear they’ll all be replaced by subdivisions, soon. can’t say i’m not responsible a little bit, though ; the land my house is on wasn’t always planted in single-family units.
the trees in these pics are next to a little stream in a small gully between two subdivisions: one almost finished and one just started. they’ll be lucky to survive in a little 20′ easement around their stream: unless the town decides to pave them over for greenway access that is.
Wow, arrgh, and yeah, don’t have to go deep into the memory banks to call up the image.
Still there’s a wonderful greenness to lot of N VA. But the forests I’ve seen disappear. Heard some awful stories of local despoliation..
It’ll be happening more slowly for the time being anyway.
