Start Your iPods

Random five, described:

  1. Portishead - Plastic. Trip hop, you're back! Well, kinda.
  2. Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - Thinking Like That. A lovely, dark & broody tune for this dark and broody weather.
  3. 10 Ft Ganja Plant - Righteous Dub. A sweet little instrumental reggae to brighten the mood.
  4. Mudhoney - Magnolia Caboose Babyshit. And then a crazed grunge instrumental to mix things up, in preparation for...
  5. The Black Keys - Howlin For You (live). This is a good one. I should like these guys more than I do, however.

Testify!

Woo-hoo! Working from home today (and waiting for the hurricane) — so I can listen! Here is a beautiful random ordering of tunes:

Sadies: The Iceberg. Instrumental lead-in to the set is lush and mellow and rich.
Soft Boys: Cherries. Hard electric blues riff. Nice contrast.
Dylan: Stealin. Old acoustic Dylan, lots of harmonica. Stealin back to my good old used ta be.
Dead: Me and My Uncle. This might be the perfect song to come between the one that preceded it and the next one. Live in Boston, December 69.
Skip James: Hard Time Killin Floor Blues. The song that defies description.

Also, on the “listening to” tip: I have been listening a lot lately to a playlist of (mostly) Memphis jug band tunes that I need to think about uploading somewhere.

No hurricane here (unless I make myself the drink!) but we have snow. A little early for winter but the kids are sledding already.

    1. Soul Coughing – Misinformed
Loved them. Goofy and weird. Groovy and jazzy. This is the sound of me meeting my wife. This was one of the first records we bought together.

    2. The Fall – A Past Gone Mad
This is different. Dancy and synthy Fall from the early 90’s. Still with the stream of conscious bizarro lyrics and singing. The Fall is certainly an acquired taste and just like sometimes folks just don’t get, say, Pavement (I have never been the biggest fan but get why they are revered) others don’t get The Fall. I get them.

    3. Saint Etienne – You’re In a Bad Way
60’s bubblegum pop done in 1993. It’s a nice song but that sort of 60’s thing has never been my cup of tea.

    4. J. Geils Band – Freeze Frame
This is so not usually my kind of thing but this song is just damn catchy. You can’t help but bob your head to it. Totally 80’s video too!

    5. Pink Floyd – Another Brick in the Wall (pt. 2)
Still great. I have this as the ringtone to anyone from my school who calls me.

Here is a random 5 from my Amazon cloud player via my new Google Chromebook!

    1. The Music – The People
They sound like Led Zep. Not necessarily a bad thing.

    2. Siouxsie and The Banshees – Helter Skelter
    Interesting choice of Beatles cover!

    3. KT Tunstall – Other Side of the World
Mellow acoustic chick-rock. Where is she now I wonder?

    4. The Eagles – Take it to the Limit
    I fucking hate The Eagles.

    5. These New Puritans – Attack Music
They should tour with Radiohead. They would make a good opener.

November soon. I loathe November and wish for it to be abolished.

But, but “Take it to the limit” is different from other Eagles songs. I love that song. Did you ever hear Casselbury-Dupree’s cover? Did you ever hear Mountain Station’s cover?
