I love this song. Sure, it’s a novelty, but in the Coasters sense, not in the Dr. Demento sense. (Though there’s some overlap there.)
I’ll never forget my seventh grade band instructor’s reaction when I ended a conversation with “meanwhile, back in the jungle.” He was a big ’50s music fan (soundtrack of his childhood and all that) and he became totally buoyant, like somebody had filled him with helium. He shouts “You know that song?” and starts dancing around. Knowing your elders’ music is good for that sort of thing.

i think i first heard this on Howard Stern’s show (ages ago). he had never heard it and was stunned by it. i think he talked about it for an hour.
