Pete!

Pepper had a hairball early Friday morning, while she was sleeping on the bed, at Mrs's feet. Then we heard slurping. I assumed Pepper was cleaning herself (she's a loud licker). Then we heard the big *thump* of Pepper jumping off the bed. But the slurping went on.

Pete!

Pete was eating Pepper's barf.

Cleaned that up. Back to sleep.

An hour later, cats are fed and I'm getting ready for work. Pepper throws up again (hairballs upset her stomach sometimes). I clean it up with some paper towels, put them in a plastic grocery bag, threw them away.

A couple of hours later, I see some white stuff under the living room table. I figure Pete has torn up some tissue paper that Mrs left out. An hour later I come back, take a closer look. It's paper towels and torn-up plastic bag. Pete stole the bag that held all the paper towels I used to clean up Pepper's barf, dragged it across the house, tore it all up and ate all the goodness within.

Disgusting little creature.

Later that day I couldn't find the kitchen sponge, so I pulled a new one out from under the sink, washed the cats' food bowls, put the sponge back next to the kitchen faucet where it belongs. Two days later, the sponge is missing again. Hmm... Could it be? Yep. There were two kitchen sponges under the living room table.

Yesterday, he tried to take a nap in the garbage can where all the plastic bags full of dirty cat litter get thrown.

Jump!

Pete grabbed and ripped-up a half-loaf of sourdough I had left on the counter. I didn't think he was interested in bread.

Pete!

Last night, Pete knocked over a huge ficus tree we have in our dining room. Scared himself pretty good, and he's lucky the pot it's in didn't crush him. Tuesday, he jumped up on the kitchen counter and stole a ziplok bag with whole pork tenderloin it. He took it into the living room and ripped it apart. He's lucky I didn't crush him.

He growls when you take away food he's not supposed to have.

He's like a Jack Russell.

While Mrs and I were out at an informal Euchre tournament, Saturday, we let Pete stay out in the house with Pepper for a few hours. Usually we lock him in a bathroom because he's a terror.

When we got back, we saw that he had found his pro-biotic food stuff - it's a powder that gets sprinkled on his food, and it smells like beef bouillon. He'd ripped a bunch of packets apart. So now we know he can get onto the kitchen counters. Then we saw that he'd found a big bag of cat treats that I'd apparently forgot to lock away. He had dragged the bag across the house, chewed through the bottom of it, and then eaten all the stuff inside.

Sunday morning, when I went to let him out of his room, the floor was covered in broken glass because he had knocked his water dish off the counter.

He's all the things I think of when I talk myself out of getting a dog.

Snow Day

Weather forecast was off by a factor of nine. So, I'm stuck at home with 9" of snow on the road. Second day in a row.

Monday Cat Blogging

Pete is serious.

He has become a Kitten Tornado. He spends hours running as fast as he can up and down the furniture, chasing Pepper, smelling things, chewing shoelaces, jumping and rolling at imaginary mice.

We have a coffee table with two big drawers, it's where we keep the cat treats. Since Pete is on his restricted diet, he doesn't get any. But he knows what they smell like, and he wants to eat them all. Friday, I opened the drawer to get a treat for Pepper and saw that Pete had chewed a hole in the bag. He learned that he can get into the drawers where the treats live by crawling into them from underneath the table. So, I put the treat bag inside a heavy duty zip-lock bag. By Saturday night he had chewed through that, too. So, no more treats for anyone! And I rigged a bunch of cardboard around the back of the drawers to keep him out.

Spurt

Pete had another vet appointment today - regularly-scheduled kitten maintenance. He's grown a pound in ten days - that's almost 50% of his previous weight.

Petey, Ya Light

We took Pete to the vet Tuesday, and they ran a bunch of tests on him. But the tests revealed nothing - no infections, no parasites, no interesting levels of anything in any of his fluids or excretions.

The vet did feed him some special prescription-only (!) cat food while they had him, and he tolerated that pretty well. So she gave us some to take home and it seems to have helped quite a lot. He's still not totally right, but the food does seem to stick with him better. So we're giving him the special food, and antibiotics, and probiotics, and Pedialyte (for hydration), and canned pumpkin (for fiber). He's no longer dehydrated and might even be putting on weight. He is always absolutely ravenous and we feed him every few hours. Still, even though food doesn't rush out of him, it comes out ... softer than ideal.

So I'm thinking ... food allergy that hasn't quite settled down? IBS, IBD?

Baby [cat] steps, I guess.

He still officially lives in the bathroom. But he's sneaked past us a couple of times and has seen most of the house and has bumped noses with Pepper. Pepper seems cool about the whole thing. Thankfully. She isn't hissing and spitting like Tricksey was when Pepper showed up.

T wanted Pepper dead, the second she first saw her through this crack in the door.

Hungry

Our little kitty is still unable to digest food properly. We've tried all kinds of foods - ending up with plain boiled chicken. But even that isn't sticking with him. Whatever he eats is out of him in 30 minutes. So he's literally starving, and dehydrated. And the vet doesn't know why yet.

Bah.
