That's My Bush!

Byork, who was really much better when he was with the Sugarcubes, writes:

One of the main reasons John McCain is facing such an tough job today is that we are now in the sixth year of a war that the president of his own party started by mistake.

How do you start a war "by mistake" ? Outside of a comedy sketch about a drunken bumbler of a President who calls his assistant with orders to "take out the Chinese!" instead of ordering "Chinese take-out", while gales of canned laughter pummel the viewer, that is.

Someone Could Still Shoot Him, Right?

Hillary shows a load of real class, here:

Hillary Clinton today brought up the assassination of Sen. Robert Kennedy while defending her decision to stay in the race against Barack Obama.

"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it," she said, dismissing calls to drop out

Yes, that makes perfect sense! She needs to stay in the race...

...in case somebody murders Obama in June!

What a fucking lunatic.

...and it's not her first time using the RFK analogy

Unifying Narratives

The very model of a modern partisan hack, Patrick Ruffini, inadvertently illustrates why the current GOP is an utter failure:

The problem with the current “agendas” on offer is that they’re small-bore. They act as though we were still in the majority and our job was to fine-tune the workings of government. It’s not. In the minority, our job is to 1) make the majority’s life miserable, grinding the House and Senate floors to a halt, and building a narrative of the Democrats as broken and incompetent, and 2) offer big, bold alternatives to this mess like the Contract did in 1994.

Instead of governing, working to make America a better place, leading, etc., Ruffini thinks it's the job of the Republican minority to grind the government to a halt, in hopes that people will vote the GOP back in out of sheer frustration with the lack of government action - inaction which the GOP itself caused.

Step 1: Control the government
Step 2: Profit
Step 3: ????

Math

According to the New York Times' numbers:

Obama has 1,953.5 total delegates, so far.
Clinton has 1,769 total delegates, so far.

Based on the rules today (FL and MI don't count), 2026 is the number a candidate needs to secure the nomination. So:

Obama needs 73 more to hit the magic number.
Clinton needs 257 more.

What's left to win?

There are currently 178.5 un-pledged super-delegates, and 86 state delegates: 265 left (round-up on that 0.5).
55 from Puerto Rico - June 1
16 from Montana - June 3
15 from South Dakota - June 3

So, if Hillary wins every outstanding super-delegate, and every remaining state delegate, she will pass the magic number by 8. Not much wiggle room there.

On the other hand, Obama can do this in a walk.

More Nutpicking

It has just been announced that Ted Kennedy has a brain tumor. That's terrible news. Best of luck to him.

Over at Balloon Juice, a commenter asked, (rhetorically, I suppose) what the odds are that a Clinton supporter on one of the crazier pro-Clinton blogs to suggest that the timing of this announcement was planned so as to distract from Clinton's upcoming win in the Kentucky primary.

Always up for a bit of sleuthing, I discovered that the odds are much better than even...

I would say his retirement is imminent. Odd that they decide to break this today of all days .. if I was cynical I’d say it was to stifle news of Hill’s momentum .. Surely one day to tell the world wouldn’t make any difference in his recovery. Just saying.

...and...

birdgal, I do catscans they knew in 15minutes after the scan was over, they held the news til Tuesday as his request. I would bet money on that. Why did they not announce it on Monday?

That second one is from a commenter at HillaryIs44.com named "conFloyd". I nutpicked one of her comments a couple of days ago: Obama is the antichrist and is working with the terrorists to kill us all! She's quite a gal. Anyway, I was just over at a NoQuarterUSA (a different pro-Hillary blog), nutpicking on a thread where all the commenters are "pledging" to not vote for Obama in the general election, and I found this gem of a comment:

The talking point for Obama is we should vote for him because of Roe vs. Wade, I am way past needing that law, so the kids that are getting him in need to learn what its like not to have safe abortions. Let them sweat like so many of us had to in the early 60’s. You could never watch TV back then without hearing about some poor young woman that died from having illegal abortion. That is what Roe vs Wade was all about!

Whew. Now what kind of a Democrat would say something like that?

Well, that comment was from "connie floyd". Yup, the one and the same. And no she's not just some random loon on the intertubes; she's also a Clinton delegate to the Texas state Democratic convention. Yee haw!

I hope Hillary is extra-super-proud of that one.

Facts

From Harper's Index:

Percentage of McCain supporters in March 2000 who said they would not vote for George W Bush : 51.
Percentage who still said this in October 2000 : 39.

Fabulous!

The roses are a nice touch, but the white horse truly puts it over the top - that and the fact that it looks like Martin Lawrence.

Looks like he's got some bad arthritis in his left thumb, though. Look how swollen those knuckles are! Ouch.

Why We Can't Have Nice Things, Pt 2

Over at the Clinton cult site, HillaryIs44 (President #44, that is), a commenter, confloyd, (who is a TX delegate no less) left this fuzzy little turd:

I wanted to tell you about my sister’s experience in Houston during a caucas in Spring, texas. She totally believes Bambi is the antichrist. She told me that she could feel evil when she walked thru the door at the elementary school she was voting in. She said it was feeling she could actually smell. I thought she was a little off, so we have never spoke about it again. My sister is very religious and practices the Jewish religion. She tells me she will not vote for Hillary unless O is not anywhere on the ticket because of what she felt at that caucas! There are alot of people that say he fits the mole exactly. I not one of those, I just believe he is somehow connected to the jihadists and will try to take this country over from the inside.

And, that's just one of many comments on that thread referring to Obama as, literally, the antichrist.

Bush Countdown WordPress Widget

Here's a WordPress widget I've written which counts down the number of days until GW Bush leaves office. You can see it in action on the sidebar, to the left of this post.

To use it:

  1. Unzip the file
  2. Upload bushcountdown.php to your WordPress wp-content/plugins/widgets directory
  3. Activate the plugin using your WordPress Plugins panel in the WP admin pages
  4. In the WordPress Presentation / Widgets page, drag and drop the Bush Countdown widget from the list at the bottom onto your sidebar.
  5. Optionally, edit your styles.css file (Presentation / Theme Editor), and add a style for the "bushDays" class. Here's mine
    .bushDays
    {
         padding-left: 10px;
    }

That will control what the "days left" text looks like. By default, it's just plain text. The appearance of the header (the white text on a green bar, here) is controlled by the styles you've set up for your sidebar.

  6. Vote Democratic.

Have fun!
