The SS Marines

An initial Marine investigation into the matter concluded that the troops would not be disciplined because there was no malicious intent. The Marines mistakenly believed the "SS" in the shape of white lightning bolts on the blue flag were a nod to sniper scouts — not members of Adolf Hitler's special unit that murdered millions of Jews, Catholics, gypsies and others, said Maj. Gabrielle Chapin, a spokeswoman at Camp Pendleton, California.

But the furor over the photo — which was taken in September 2010 in Afghanistan — grew as Jewish leaders and others questioned whether it was an innocent mistake.

Heh, furor.

Go Santorum!

If you win, the "conservative" base have its chance to show the country just what "conservatism" is all about! And I think we really need to know. Snicker.

Sadly, however, last night's contests were either non-binding (Minnesota and Colorado) or just a preliminary (Missouri). They gave people a chance to vote their conscience, and not worry so much about November. These were essentially straw polls.

Venus And Mars Are Out Tonight

... Jupiter and Uranus, too.

In fact, Venus and Uranus are about to nearly overlap each other on Thursday.

Venus is unmistakable. Jupiter is nearly as bright, and higher up. Mars is a really nice red and you can't miss it ... once it's up. But Uranus is so faint and tiny that it's pretty much indistinguishable from any ordinary background star. You can only see it if you know exactly where to look. But, having Venus right there definitely helps!

I got a picture of it, but it's nothing spectacular - just a pale blue star in a shot that Venus completely dominates.

Macca Entendre

Paul McCartney has a new record out. It's called "Kisses On The Bottom", which, well...

Anyway, it turns out that the phrase "kisses on the bottom" is from the classic tune, made popular by Fats Waller, "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter":

I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you
I'm gonna write words oh so sweet
They're gonna knock me off my feet
Kisses on the bottom, I'll be glad I got 'em
I'm gonna smile and say, "I hope you're feelin' better,"
And close "with love" the way you do;

Which is sweet. And is about the little X's on the bottom of a love letter. And is not about rim jobs.

Not that there's...

Newt The Warrior

Multi-faceted internet meme Chuck Norris whips it - his Big Book Of metaphors - out and explains why Newt needs to win the GOPprimary:

I’m reminded here of Samuel Adams’ wisdom and challenge: “If ever time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.”

If it’s true that you can always tell one’s positions by the enemies they have, and I believe it is, then Newt is exactly where he needs to be, battling the trifecta of tyranny: Mitt’s treasuries, the MSM and the GOP elite.

The "trifecta of tyranny"! Was it Tyrants Day down at the local track? "The first 100 visitors receive a free box set of Saddam's novels!"

Nonsense aside, it sounds a little grandiose. The GOP isn't a government in which a single ruler is vested with absolute power. Nor does it wield absolute power unjustly or cruelly. They're a political party - a fund raising and distribution center, basically. Maybe Norris is overestimating the power the GOP actually wields.

One cannot, in any way, underestimate the grisly enormity of this triple-headed monstrosity.

Well, excuuuuuse me!

It is a Goliath of ginormous proportions. And let there be no doubt: Only heaven and earth combining their forces will overcome this gargantuan foe. As I’ve said in previous columns, we need the best of the best veterans of political war to fight against the three-headed chthonic giant, and then to scale the Washington acropolis and combat the supreme sultan of political swing occupying the Oval Office.

Thomas Paine was correct: “Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered.”

Yow. I don't even know what the "supreme sultan of political swing" means - Obama, Guitar George, and Harry the honky-tonk piano player play politically-charged Creole music at little dive bars in south London ? (Does Obama play drums or bass? Do they get their chicks for free?) But, just as a series of words, it sure sounds purty. Very poetic. And I do like the image of baby-headed Newt defeating a three-headed anything, then scaling anything, on his way to fight Obama and his band of unambitious jazzbos. That's a hell of scene you've painted, Chuck! Next time, maybe you could take it easy on the historical references, though: not everything in the present is a replay of something from the past.
