Straight Talk

McCain, in 2000:

"I hate the gooks," McCain said yesterday in response to a question from reporters aboard his campaign bus. "I will hate them as long as I live."

Later, he clarified, saying that he was only talking about the individuals that imprisoned and tortured him (by itself a reasonable position, IMO - I'd hate them too). But, replace "gooks" with a more familiar ethnic slur, the N-word, for example. Does the clarification get him off the hook ?

Good grief. In the UK, had any politician of said something like that, their career would quite likely be over – they certainly wouldn’t be in the running to lead a major political party. The mind boggles (as will China if he ends up POTUS).

So, is he actually a rabid wingnut Creationist in disguise or really a ‘liberal conservative’?

he’s actually pretty conservative. but he’s broken from his party on a few high profile things, and so partisan Republicans hate him. obviously, though, since he’s in the lead, mainstream Republicans (and a lot of the non-partisan middle) like him just fine. he’s not a creationist, or outwardly very religious at all, thankfully – so, he won’t be that kind of president, should he win.

    >be that kind of president

    Small mercies.

On the other hand, Hillary comes across as a real b*tch – I had no idea she was so … ruthless? Man, voting for her is going to hurt! Of course, your man Barack could do it yet – (Super) Tuesday should seal it no? If Obama loses will she make him her VP-in-waiting or is she too much of a hard-ass?

Tuesday should seal it up, yep. nationally, Obama’s gaining, but it might be too late. hopefully the $100 i just gave him is enough to put him over the top :)

i don’t have a clue how people pick their VPs. a Hillary/Obama ticket would be pretty tough to beat, IMO but they’ve spent so much effort attacking each other, there’s gotta be some hard feelings there, so it doesn’t seem, likely… but again… it’s all a mystery to me.

and yeah, Hillary is tough. if she wins, i’m not sure she’ll be tough for the right things, but she’ll be formidable. and she’ll have Bill out there, shooting his mouth off, keeping the circus alive.

it’s an interesting election, at least! a black guy, a former first lady, a Mormon, and a Republican that conservatives hate… much more fun than the last few.
