.Net Nuke

Several Republicans have criticized President Obama for placing new limits on the use of U.S. nuclear weapons, but Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., raised eyebrows among liberal foreign policy observers by suggesting during a Wednesday rally with Sarah Palin that the American nuclear arsenal is needed even to deter cyber attacks.

"If in fact there is a nation who is compliant with all of the rules ahead of time and they've complied with the United Nations on nuclear proliferation, if they fire against the United States a biological weapon, a chemical weapon or maybe a cyber attack, well then we aren't going to be firing back with nuclear weapons," Bachmann said. "Doesn't that make us all feel safe?"

This country's going insaaaaannnne.

We have an election in about a month but I can’t get too excited about it as the main players are basically cut from the same cloth (and are basically all wankers). A change would be welcome (because 13 years of any government is too long really) but the alternative are so similar that nothing whatsoever will change. Sigh.

Our electoral system is fucked too. So I’m hoping for a hung parliament (where no one party has overall majority) to maybe spice things up a bit. Hardly exciting though – not like you yanks and your 2008 election – I found it thrilling from 3,000 miles away, so how you managed to handle it while ACTUALLY BEING THERE AND PARTICIPATING I’ll never guess.

I’d like to see some form of proportional representation here in the UK – one person, one vote. Yes, it would mean some of the nasty parties get a few seats, but if 5% of the electorate vote for them, then they should be represented. The system we have now means that if you live in a ‘safe’ seat (where your local MP has a massive majority) then your vote feels like a waste. Where I live the Tories and the Liberal Democrats are jostling for the seat but the Labour party are nowhere. Which must piss Labour supporters off no end, as they may as well stay at home come May 6th.) Not sure that’s the best way to engage people in the process. There’s a bunch of ‘marginal seats’ – ones that could go either way – and they are all the media and politicians care about. It’s all fucked. I never used to care but I hope we get some electoral reform before my kids are old enough to vote, else they probably won’t bother.

elections … meh. they seem like a good idea, but you always end up electing disappointments!

i admit i know nothing about UK politics, but we have the same problem here with safe House districts. it’s nearly impossible to unseat an incumbent Representative these days – about the only thing that will do it is a good scandal. part of that is due to the way district boundaries are drawn – they’re drawn to maximize the votes of one party or the other. only a handful of districts are ever truly up for grabs.
