There's a good interview with Béla Fleck over at Popdose. He talks mostly about a recent movie-making trip to Africa where he played with different groups of African musicians.

Cool interview, thanks cleek!
I love African music. IMO, Africa is the missing puzzle piece in American culture and life. African culture has been part of America for, like, 400 years, but always out in the back room.
Bela Fleck is one bad MF.

i can tell! :)
i’m starting to get a feel for it – between your links and the CDs my dad sends me (he goes to all the festivals in Montreal and brings back all kinds of stuff), i’m learning. slowly.
a small example: i recently found out that the Talking Heads were really into Fela Kuti (who you introduced me to) when they made their “Remain In Light” album. and that makes perfect sense. i’d always wondered how they got from “Psycho Killer” and “Take Me To The River” to those wild poly-rhythmic jams on R.I.L.. and, well, Fela Kuti is how.

yep. the influences are everywhere, but are rarely discussed explicitly.
