Eagle-eyed Mrs Cleek was looking at our on-line credit card records the other day and spotted a strange $500 charge on our card. It was charged to "Yahoo Search Marketing", but neither she nor I had ever made any purchases through Yahoo. After a day of calling around, she learned that someone had swiped our CC info and was waiting for $10,000 worth of charges, in $500 increments, to clear. But, luckily, CitiBank stopped them after the first.
I wish ill on the thief.

Fascinating. Was the $500 charge committed, or simply authorized (pending)? If it was committed, are you guys liable for it?
yeah, it was already cleared.
but i believe Citi said they’d drop it because it was obviously fraud.
Back in 2007 I noticed a small transaction on my Visa card that was nothing to do with me – someone has used my card to buy pay-as-you-go mobile phone credit. This was shortly after I gave out my Visa details when ordering a Domino’s pizza, and I’m convinced the spotty Herbert taking the order passed the details on.
Anyway, the bank refunded the money and, for safety’s sake, issued me with a new card. All well and good.
However, what the bank failed to tell me was that they would be randomly checking my card when it was least convenient – when paying for petrol, trying to buy something online, etc. It really is a pain in the arse to have your purchase declined when you’ve a queue of people behind you. At one point the bastards locked my card and all my weekend purchases were declined.
Buying tracks from iTunes is hit and miss. Often the transaction is cancelled and I will get a call from an Indian call centre asking me to verify myself. Ack.
“spotty Herbert”?
