    maybe my favorite Beatles song.

Dentist? Ha! We don’t bother in England.

that $1200 had to go somewhere. i figured 90 minutes in a dentist chair was as good a way to spend it as any…

OT – My BSG Season 4.0 DVDs arrived today!!! Now, if I can just avoid learning the ending of the new episodes that start Friday until they get released on DVD I will be all set (though it would have been nice if someone had told me they were going to include Razor in the set before I bought Razor, as now I own two copies).

you need to take the next two days off from work and watch them all!

cause there are going to be spoilers everywhere once this new season starts.

BSG airs next Tuesday here in Blighty. I could of course download a torrent on Saturday, but I’ll wait to see it in full HD glory. Avoiding spoilers in the intervening 4 days won’t be easy – I’ll stay away from Digg for starters – the ending of The Sopranos was ruined for me by a post on that fracking site.

BTW, we do visit the dentist really – it’s only Hollywood that thinks all Brits have bad teeth. :)

    1. Erica Azim “Ndomutenda Mambo”
    2. Savina Yannatou “O Onda”
    3. Chiwoniso “Pamuromo”
    4. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones “Who’s Got Three?”
    5. Chiwoniso “Kurima”

It’s ladies’ world music day here at russell’s house. With a little James on the side to keep it real.

I’m staying the hell away from BSG, the last thing in the world I need is another addictive hobby.

    hey, links

Erica Azim. I love mbira, and Zimbabwean music in general. Erica’s an American girl, but she went to Zimbabwe when it was still Rhodesia and learned all this stuff from the real cats.

    Savina Yannatou.

    Chiwoniso, Zimbabwean homegirl.

    Sileas. Scots kick ass.

Vera Bila, the tzigane real deal.

Bela and the boys, being their usual sick selves. Banjo, bassoon, tenor, tabla, and rhythm section. What else is there to say?

    Cool sets all!

BTW, the Uncut review of the AC album is particularly gushing:

“…but right now Merriweather Post Pavilion doesn’t just seem like one of the first great records of 2009, it feels like one of the landmark American albums of the century so far.”

    Yikes.

heh. i like that one. maybe it’s cause i got a little romani in me – or so i was told in dark whispers at family gatherings.

and, that bassoon solo was wild!

So, anyone got any Animal Collective?

    nope.

The whoops and hollers that previously held together the sublime, chaotic urgency of their earlier work now signal the calm sense of euphoria and wonder that ripples through this wide eyed record.

if this is calm euphoria, there’s no way i could handle their chaotic and energetic stuff :)

then again, my first impressions tend to be all wrong. i’ll give em another listen in a bit.

I tried to get into BSG last season, so convincing was a co-worker’s adoration. I wonder if it’s one of the shows you had to get hooked on from the start.

On the other hand, I did not become a regular of “Lost” until Season 2 — and I am now totally hooked. New eps begin next Wednesday.

BTW, cleek, watched the last “Saturday Night Live” and enjoyed Taylor Swift. Thought she was a country star, but it looks like she is trying what I guess you would call rock or whatever it is that Avril L does. Worked for me.

I had mainly been aware of Taylor Swift passing through the mags at the checkout count. Her voice — which will clearly change over time, something always interesting to watch in an artist — is sweet.

And she is so young. Close-ups revealed her to be much younger than I imagined, so that made me all the more impressed with her composure.

I can’t ever remember being influenced by the music on SNL until this season.

I mentioned at the mothership how amazed I was at beyonce’s “Single Girls” performance in December, a song I had obviously come to late. The song is pure pop, but her stage performance is raw, sexualized energy. Worked for me.

gotta say I’m digging Amy Winehouse.

Most of the retro-soul stuff you hear doesn’t really get it — a lot of strained athletic singing but no real juice.

ms winehouse seems to me to be the real deal. don’t know where she picked it up but she got it.

Yeh, Back to Black is a brilliant piece of work. The title track is just perfect. Shame she seems to be caught in a spiral of destruction, although judging by recent reports she may be heading in the right direction again.
