Yeah, but what are the factors?
New Years Eve chez russell:
We had the neighbors and a good friend and her one-year-old son over for dinner.
A nice Cotes du Rhone and some Veuve Cliquot toasts. The one-year-old’s mom’s shrimp boiled in Old Bay with homemade cocktail sauce, then my wife’s homemade coq au vin, then my neighbor’s excellent flourless chocolate tart.
Pre-dinner jamming with the one-year-old on my marimba, then many tales of years gone by and yet to be. A big fire in the fireplace.
Watch the ball fall, say a word of thanks that, for yet one more year, Times Square wasn’t blown up, and so to bed.
Seven degrees Fahrenheit when we went to bed, nine when we got up, but the heat is on. Good times indeed.
Gotta say though, Bubba Ho-Tep looks well worth watching, and it’s hard to beat fireworks.
Happy New Year to cleek, Mrs. cleek, and the whole cleek clique the world around.
Best –
Happy New Year to all Cleekians. I hope 2009 is peachy.
Absinthe and tater tots! You ‘n’ Rimbaud!
Nihilist!

we didn’t get to the end, but the first 3/4 was fun.

subversion of tradition should be man’s goal and highest achievement.

Yeah, I love it. I have absolutely no chops on it, so mostly I play scales, simple exercises, and really simple student pieces on it. My goal is to play some jazz on it, so right now I’m also working on really simple ii-V7-I voicings with four mallets.
Sometime around 2013 I should be ready to gig on it. :(
In the meantime, it’s just a nice sound in the house. My neighbors like it, they think it sounds like beautiful wind chimes.
Our friend Iana and her one-year-old son Zack, who were over for new year’s eve, stayed with us for a couple of months over the summer. She was in a kind of ugly divorce scenario, they had to sell the house, she couldn’t go home to PA because it would make it hard for Zack’s dad to see him, yadda yadda yadda. So, they hung out with us. They’re great people, it was fun.
While they were here, I got Zack into the marimba early and often. It’s got a deep, rich, fat tone, and the technique required to get a good sound out of it can be mastered by a one-year-old in about one minute.
So we had a good old time on New Year’s playing C-D-E, E-D-C, C-C-C, and other popular childhood favorites.
Then we ate shrimp. It was a good night.
Hope the new year brings nothing but good stuff to the cleek household!
