About the most that can be said for Donald Trump, as a politician and as a person, is that he didn't let being President of the United States change him. This is not really a compliment, to be clear. Trump's public persona was grandiose enough that he tended to talk about becoming president as if it was something like a demotion, with him benevolently stepping away from his job as The King Of Success and his wonderful life enjoying the finer things alongside the most powerful and influential people to do the world a favor. If he was awed by the power of the office at all, it was mainly in the same way that he would previously have been impressed by particularly large slabs of marble, or the number of models in attendance at an associate's birthday party. He certainly never let the immensity of all that responsibility push him to work any harder; the fantasy that Trump would rise to the moment, which persisted in the elite echelons of the mainstream media through a poignantly long series of entirely unmet moments, was not so much misplaced as it was a category error.
The whole thing is glorious.
Even though he's not yet dead, and this isn't about him being dead, when it's time to write his obituary, this will be the one to beat.

So the other night, I’m sitting at the bar of a tony restaurant I frequent … lots of accomplished good looking wealthy folks, and as happens way too often, I’m overhearing the conversation between two goons, who came in separately, and who were clearly in the dumper for Trump and the fascist conservative movement, and they are bloviating about these latest indictments and their ample weaponry, ya know, some fact-free garbage about the indictments themselves (Item: they ignored the fact that none of the charges referred to documents Trump did return AND that if he had returned every document there would be no charges whatsoever), but also their yearning for violent Civil War and the overthrow of the Biden government and their theories that, natch, Hillary and Obama were behind the entire case, and then the conversation inevitably trailed off, with plenty of big swinging dick haw-hawing, into a discussion of their favorite gun shooting ranges, including the one that specializes in catering to “machine gun” aficionados like themselves.
Now, usually, given the close seating, I might get the chance to “engage” this type of horseshit (I’ve given the once-over a few times in the place to jackass Covid mask and vaccine deniers) with some mild sarcastic fact checking, but it occurred to me .. finally .. that there is no use, we are too far along, too late in the going in the violent conservative insurrectionist insanity to talk sense, and also that, as our goofball libertarian friend Charles WT at OBWI likes to remind everyone, an armed society is a polite society, though too noisy for his tender ears, by which he and the two thugs sitting next to me mean, if we don’t like YOUR First Amendment expression, we’ll fucking shoot you.
I spose I could have handed each of them a $20 bill, since money is now speech under the fucked up Citizens United ruling, and tell them I was paying them to shut the fuck up, but off they went into the night to jerk off to the sound of gunfire in the distance.
