Too Soon?

After much study, I've come to the conclusion that the Prince songs I remember are better than the Prince songs he actually recorded.

I’m not deeply familiar with Prince’s work, and came to it late. Fantastic guitar player. Amazing entertainer.

Regarding his songs, I’ve lately started participating in karaoke at my local watering hole, after watching for several years (with lots of encouragement from the male heterosexual cross-dressing deejay since I started). It’s harder than it looks, but I’ve sung into a microphone before.

This has been a rough year for rock and roll passings. But I’m not sick yet of the David Bowie songs, for example, or Billy Paul, or Merle Haggard that folks have been doing and might even do one or two of Bowie’s myself.

But if hear the anthemic “Purple Rain” one more time at the joint, not a bad song, but not a great song either, I’m going to sing “Shout” by the Isley Brothers and blow the roof off the joint in protest.

I’m working on Richard Cheese’s cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “I Want to Fuck You Like An Animal” and may debut it next week. I wonder if my apartment building neighbors can hear me practice.

Prince occupies the same space as Aerosmith and U2 once did for me when I listened to terrestrial rock radio: This is fine, I won’t switch stations. But I am not motivated to own this so I can hear it again and again.

Aerosmith is definitely one of those, for me.

i was really into U2 when i was young, so they’re sentimental favorites – up until Rattle And Hum when they abandoned me.
