After eight months off, I started running against yesterday. My right arch still aches a little sometimes, or tingles a bit now and then. But, I've done everything I can think of to fix it, and maybe this is as good as it will get. Plus, my pants are starting to get tight...
I've started running dozens of times since high school, so I know to take it easy at first. So, I only went a mile, slowly, carefully. And I expected to be sore today (and even more so tomorrow) - such is life. But the soreness started just a couple of hours after my one mile. And today is pretty painful. Tomorrow could suck.

I started running in January and am totally hooked. My first run was about a mile and I could hardly get down the stairs the next morning. I run every other day rain or shine and am careful to only increase my distance slowly. I did 12K today (7.5 miles) and am aiming for 10 miles by June. My ankles *itch* sometimes though. I might have varicose veins but don’t know if I should be concerned or not. My biggest fear is injury or being flattened by a car as I like road running.
7miles? sheesh. that’s a lot. :)
i tend to build up to 3 or 4 and then stay there. maybe on an awesome day i’ll do five, but 3 is my standard.
no sidewalks where you live?
I like running out in the countryside and there aren’t always pavements, especially on the narrow country lanes round here.
Running is a really big deal here in the UK at the moment: it’s almost fashionable is my guess. Most major towns now have “park runs” on a Saturday morning – a 5K run with a couple of hundred other people, just for fun. Just register online, turn up and go for it. I might give it a go as I hear that running with other people is a great way to increase your speed… but solitary running is quite relaxing in a weird way.
Do you listen to music when you run? I’d struggle without it yet hardcore runners I know prefer not to have music playing.

if you’re competitive, it sure is. i gave up group runs because i’m far more competitive mentally than i am physically. and it’s frustrating not getting impressive times. that’s why i stopped measuring my time and distance, too. too much pressure. now i just go out and run what feels like a good distance at whatever speed feels right.
but solitary running is quite relaxing in a weird way.
it totally is. clears the mind.
Do you listen to music when you run?
occasionally. it does help the time pass. but listening to the world is nice, too.
“Do you listen to music when you run?”
I too took the opportunity to listen to the natural world. Also, a good time to imagine music you’d like to play and work on odd time signature that are hard for non-Eastern Europeans to “feel.”
So, when counting 5 or 7, “1” is always on alternating feet.
I wrote most of this sneering-at-admonitions-by-the-rich-to-bootstrap song running and it’s in 5.

I was very angry during the Bush admin.
well, i was going to listen. but it looks like my work PC is in a pissy mood and won’t play any sound right now. maybe your anger broke it.
Finally! Some tangible results!
i like it!
you pulled off the trick of making 5 not sound like someone’s counting to 5 and then just starting the same pattern over.
(i like the other stuff you have there, too)
Thanks, man!
Ars est celare artem, as the Romans liked to say!
I hated running so much when I was in middle school and high school, I didn’t learn until just last year that if you start slow it can be fantastic. I did the C25K thing and I loved it, but I’ve never taken so many Advil in my life.
i’m afraid of NSAIDs now… i’ve read too many articles like this:
hey doc, my quads are sore. got any vicodin i could nom on?
I’m anticipating some plantar fasciitis. Make with the oxys!
