Some of what my car CD player is playing these days:
- Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires Of The City. While I do prefer the overt guitar-based afro-pop of the first two records to the studio-confections of this one, it's still a fun record. Plenty of good songs, interesting lyrics, etc.. Four raquos »»»»
- The National - The Boxer. Reminds me of The Church, Joy Division, and what I imagine Nick Cave sounds like. In other words: Very 80's alt influenced. Nice. Four raquos »»»»
- Mos Def - The New Danger. There's a live-band feel on most of this, but not a very interesting one. A couple of catchy tunes, but a lot of stuff that just doesn't grab me. Two raquos »»
Y'all got anything new ?
I’m mostly listening to:
The new National one, “Trouble Will Find Me”
QOTSA, “…Like Clockwork”
YYYs, “Mosquito”
Atoms for Peace, “AMOK”
And it’s all good baby.
People, people I trusted, have long told me that Quadrophenia is a masterpiece. Now I am finding out for myself. So far, it would seem, they are right. It’s pretty amazing.
I have been listening to some of my own older stuff. This anti-Bush screed is from 2006.

me like
:)
I forgot Shields by Grizzly Bear. Great record.
if you like GB, check out Department Of Eagles. it’s one of the GB guys and his college roommate. they’re a bit more dreamy and moody than GB, and less jittery, but definitely related.
Found a whole lotta downloadable folk music — it is Folk Music in America, a 15-LP collection released in 1976 with some truly bizarre stuff.
15 lps? wow!
What a score! I’m going to start working my way through these tonight.
“Nobody’s Fault,” the first track on the first record, is one of my favorite slide guitar songs to play. I’m not very good at it, but I still like it.

Speaking of Blind Willie Johnson:
“In 1945, his home burned to the ground. With nowhere else to go, Johnson lived in the burned ruins of his home, sleeping on a wet bed in the August/September Texas heat. He lived like this until he contracted malarial fever and died on September 18, 1945. (The death certificate reports the cause of death as malarial fever, with syphilis and blindness as contributing factors.) In a later interview, his wife, Angeline said she tried to take him to a hospital but they refused to admit him because he was blind, while other sources report that his refusal was due to being black.”
Bookmarked for the next time I’m feeling sorry for myself.
I’m pretty well satisfied with how this tape came out. Listening right now to us playing “Helpless”.
Helpless! Pretty good!
Was at the (local) music festival this weekend and bought cd’s from two bands. Now I’m listening to Fresh Outta the Garage by FELT and to From the Boneyard by the 4th Street Niteowls. Highly recommend both!
Hm. link for FELT is http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/felt1.
