Among the bonus features are the original trailers for each film and… almost all of them are completely awful. Even for ROTJ. Maybe the art of cutting a trailer is much much better now, but man are the original trilogy ones awful.
We’ll see if JJ Abrams can reproduce the magic (although I guess I’ll never be a 5 year old boy again).

ha!
i don’t think i remember them at all. time to see if they’re on YouTube.
i have one of the DVD box sets, with all the silly ‘updates’. such a shame to see them cruise into Mos Eisley where they meet all these critters that aren’t lit by the same sun as everything else in the scene.

i’m skeptical of that. i’m just hoping that when he fucks it up, it will be a different kind of fuck up than Lucas would have done.

it pains me to think youth had that much to do with how good those first two movies seemed.
Ugh
Didn’t think of youtube. The ones for Star Wars are horrendous. I read a review of the laserdsics when I bought them, which with respect to the trailers said something along the lines of “it’s as if 20th Century Fox had no idea what they had” in the movie.
Agree on the “updates.” It’s one thing to clean up special effects, quite another to change dialogue, insert additional “things,” etc. I go back and forth on “Deleted Scenes”/”Director’s Cuts,” which can be fun, but don’t insert stuff and then pretend it’s been there all along, or as if it was “what you would have done” if you could as Lucas did.
My friend in the movie business thinks Abrams will do a good job, but as you note we’ll see.

fingers crossed! it would be nice if they were at least fun to watch.
now that i think of it, i liked the last Trek movie, which Abrams did. so maybe he does have the skills to do it. hope so.
Ugh
I’m actually shocked that my LD player still works, as it’s gone through two moves (including one cross-country) without the supposedly necessary precautions, and was purchased circa-1993 when I was in college (and, it may not work now; I turned in on early last year just to see if it worked and, yep!). The only reason I keep it is for those LDs. Probably should move them over to a different format and junk it.
Now I’m going to have to try it again….. :-)
Ugh
Here’s the trailer for SW I was thinking of, it’s more the voiceover and music that make it so terrible (also notice they hadn’t colored the light sabers yet).
I’m pretty sure I saw that trailer, in the theater. (Possibly right before Freaky Friday.) I particularly remember the “story of a boy and a girl” and “heroes and villains” part.
As some YouTube commenter said, that trailer is proof that John Williams deserves at least 33% of the credit for what made that movie great.
I own this:
