That one scene is a critical piece of evidence in my “Darth Vader was not the most powerful man in the Empire and should not have been treated as such in the misguided prequel trilogy” crusade. If he was really the Chosen One or the Emperor’s right-hand man or whatever he was later made in to, General Motti would never have mouthed off to him like that.
exactly!
that scene always made me wonder what Vader’s role on the Death Star really was. if he’s not the ultimate, unquestionable boss on the scene, and can be openly disrespected by the military commander, why does everybody call him ‘Lord’ ? is he part of some vestigial monarchy who’s allowed to tag along on military missions because he represents the Empire?
of course it’s Lucas, so maybe i shouldn’t think about this too hard. he probably stole that scene from some old movie and dropped it into IV without caring if it introduces questions he hadn’t thought out.
Well, clearly this is incorrect. The Emperor was the most powerful man in the Empire at the time of A New Hope and Mr. Vader was happily going around doing the Emperor’s bidding. This included, for example, taking orders from Grand Moff Tarkin in very same scene.
It wasn’t until The Empire Strikes Back that Mr. Vader got the idea that he and his son might “rule the galaxy” and thus realize that he no longer needed to take crap from the Emperor.
