Tell me more about ‘Spoon’. What do they sound like? Where should I start?
you should start with Girls Don’t Tell (my #17), and then work your way forwards.
they sound like… well… umm… i can’t think of who else they sound like. but, they do a pretty straightforward rock thing, not heavy like the White Stripes, and not psychedelic like the Shins. they’re not electronic or folky and they’re not slick – a lot of their stuff sounds kindof slapped-together. but when they’re on they can write perfect alt-rock songs.
in some ways, Girls Can Tell reminds of early 80’s bands like Squeeze but not anywhere near as slickly played or produced. like the little brothers of the guys from Squeeze got drunk, listened to a lot of punk and decided to make a record.
