PR could be a State?

I'd love to see Puerto Rico become the 51st state.

  1. We would have to stop referring to Canada / Israel / UK / Mexico / DC as the "51st State" - a cliche I dislike.
  2. It would bring two probably-Democratic Senators and 5 probably-Democratic House members.
  3. The current House Republicans would be forced to choose between voting in favor of PR's statehood or demolishing any chance of getting any Hispanic support, for a generation.
  4. I really dislike the idea of "territories". In or out, IMO.
  5. A 51-star flag would be fun.

  1. Ugh

    1. We’d just shift to the “52nd” state. DC should be a state or retro-ceded to MD. It’s a disgrace as is.
    2. One hopes; although the net Dem gain would likely be less as House members are withdrawn from other states unless Congress decides to up the # of Reps from 435.
    3. Agree.
    4. Agree. There probably should be a 52nd state on top of PR (or 53rd if DC is also a state), to include Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guantanamo Bay, Okinawa, and all the other places we lord over. We’d need a name (I vote for “Kerplakistan”).
    5. Or 52!
