Fuck the man

Guitar Tab Universe is in trouble with the music publishers, so is OLGA (OnLine Guitar Archives). These sites publish guitar tablature (sheet music for guitar players who can't read music) of whatever songs people figure out and send in - totally amateur stuff. It's great if you need to learn a song fast, or if you just can't figure something out yourself. It's often wrong, too. But, most of the time, it's good enough to get you started. But no, The Man says that's copyright infringement.

Fuck The Man.

Here's Jimi Hendrix's Red House as found on OLGA:

A friend of mine told me this was the way to go as far as playing
the intro and solo to "Red House."

I'm afraid I've forgotten the latter part of the solo (the good part), and
the problem of figuring out how to play Hendrix wail 'n distort is more than
my equal.

Anyway, what do ya want fer nothin'?

My notation is:

	/	a slide
	~	wiggle yer fingers
	h	hammer on
	p	pull off
	'	bend
	-	buy SubG (that's me) lots of beer

..then Mr. Hendrix commences to sing whilst he's playing lead, which is
more than I can say for myself.

The lyrics are:

There's a red house over yonder.
	That's where my baby stays.
Lord, there's a red house over yonder,
Lord, that's where my baby stays.
I ain't been home to see my baby
In ninety-nine and one half days.

Wait a minute, something's wrong here,
The key won't unlock this door.
	Wait a minute, something's wrong,
Lord have mercy, this key won't unlock this door.
	Something's gone wrong here--
I have a bad, bad feeling
That my baby don't live here no more.

That's alright--I still got my guitar.

  Look out, now!

At the ..., Hendrix repeats the 10p7, 7 lick a bunch of times, then
does a bit or two that I've got no idea how to play, then sings:

Well, I might as well go back over yonder
	Way back among the hills.
Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do.
Lord, I might as well go back over yonder
Way back yonder acorss the hills.

Even if my baby don't l_v_ me no more,
	I know her sister will.

Now play a little blues "see ya" riff, and then play something else.

Titties and
Beer forever,
Yours etc.,

Hey Jimi, sorry if that cost your estate any money.

Fucking RIAA bastards. Sorry, but this really pisses me off. I basically learnt guitar using OLGA back in the mid-90s – without it, I would of lost interest. I was speechless when I first discovered OLGA, and it meant I could bang out songs I loved without asking a muso friend to work out the chords for me. Man, once I’d nailed barre chords, I had a pile of OLGA printouts as high as my knees! :)

I also buy official songbooks though – even with access to OLGA – if I loved an album, then I would do the decent thing and pay for the “official” transcriptions (though they were often inaccurate as well). I have a bookcase full of ’em, and just like access to free MP3s hasn’t stopped my buying CDs, using OLGA doesn’t stop me buying songbooks. Man, I have a beautiful book containing every Beatles song recorded (guitars, bass, keyboards – even drums!) that cost me a lot of money, but, with sites like OLGA, isn’t strictly necessary. See – the “man” knows shit.

This isn’t the first time this has happened either – I remember when OLGA used to include the lyrics, but the fucking man soon put a stop to that. Sigh. Well, it’ll be my favourite Russian site for chords/tabs from now on I guess (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs). I’m sure it won’t be long before these sites disappear forever – regardless of the country that hosts them. Bastards.

And for the record, here is one of my favourite Radiohead songs – “Karma Police”. Fuck you RIAA:
