Pete!

Jump!

Nikon D90

Pete grabbed and ripped-up a half-loaf of sourdough I had left on the counter. I didn't think he was interested in bread.

Important Announcement

While Mrs and I were out at an informal Euchre tournament, Saturday, we let Pete stay out in the house with Pepper for a few hours. Usually we lock him in a bathroom because he's a terror.

When we got back, we saw that he had found his pro-biotic food stuff - it's a powder that gets sprinkled on his food, and it smells like beef bouillon. He'd ripped a bunch of packets apart. So now we know he can get onto the kitchen counters. Then we saw that he'd found a big bag of cat treats that I'd apparently forgot to lock away. He had dragged the bag across the house, chewed through the bottom of it, and then eaten all the stuff inside.

Sunday morning, when I went to let him out of his room, the floor was covered in broken glass because he had knocked his water dish off the counter.

He's all the things I think of when I talk myself out of getting a dog.

Snow Day

Weather forecast was off by a factor of nine. So, I'm stuck at home with 9" of snow on the road. Second day in a row.

Monday Cat Blogging

Pete is serious.

He has become a Kitten Tornado. He spends hours running as fast as he can up and down the furniture, chasing Pepper, smelling things, chewing shoelaces, jumping and rolling at imaginary mice.

We have a coffee table with two big drawers, it's where we keep the cat treats. Since Pete is on his restricted diet, he doesn't get any. But he knows what they smell like, and he wants to eat them all. Friday, I opened the drawer to get a treat for Pepper and saw that Pete had chewed a hole in the bag. He learned that he can get into the drawers where the treats live by crawling into them from underneath the table. So, I put the treat bag inside a heavy duty zip-lock bag. By Saturday night he had chewed through that, too. So, no more treats for anyone! And I rigged a bunch of cardboard around the back of the drawers to keep him out.

Dippin Dots

(taken a year ago today)

Megrez chose that moment to hide behind a tree branch.

Fun fact: As you might know, the second star from the bottom in this pic, the middle of the big dipper's handle, is a double star: Mizar (the bright one) and Alcor (the dimmer one). And they are actually a pair (and not just coincidentally near each other from our vantage point). But it turns out that Alcor is itself a double star. And Mizar is actually two doubles. So there are six stars there, even though we can only see two.

Petey, Ya Light

We took Pete to the vet Tuesday, and they ran a bunch of tests on him. But the tests revealed nothing - no infections, no parasites, no interesting levels of anything in any of his fluids or excretions.

The vet did feed him some special prescription-only (!) cat food while they had him, and he tolerated that pretty well. So she gave us some to take home and it seems to have helped quite a lot. He's still not totally right, but the food does seem to stick with him better. So we're giving him the special food, and antibiotics, and probiotics, and Pedialyte (for hydration), and canned pumpkin (for fiber). He's no longer dehydrated and might even be putting on weight. He is always absolutely ravenous and we feed him every few hours. Still, even though food doesn't rush out of him, it comes out ... softer than ideal.

So I'm thinking ... food allergy that hasn't quite settled down? IBS, IBD?

Baby [cat] steps, I guess.

He still officially lives in the bathroom. But he's sneaked past us a couple of times and has seen most of the house and has bumped noses with Pepper. Pepper seems cool about the whole thing. Thankfully. She isn't hissing and spitting like Tricksey was when Pepper showed up.

T wanted Pepper dead, the second she first saw her through this crack in the door.
