So Popular It's A Secret?

Oh those wily exotic southerners.

Recently, while visiting me in Brooklyn, my mom’s eyes went twinkly as she noticed all the wild pokeweed growing around the neighborhood. A woolgathering reminiscence of her childhood in Texas spilled forth: cooking and eating the onion-infused greens straight from the pan; her stoic anticipation as her mother added vinegar to the last dregs of poke-broth, knocking it back like a shot of whiskey.

She was surprised to find that my New England–bred boyfriend had never heard of the poisonous, towering perennial weed, with its oblong leaves and magenta berries and stalks. Despite the fact that the kudzu-like Phytolacca americana sprouts up all across North America, poke sallet, a dish made from the plant’s slightly-less-toxic leaves, is a regional thing, popular only to Appalachia and the American South. The leaves must be boiled in water three times to cook out their toxins, and, as aficionados will tell you, it’s well worth the extra effort.

Been in NC 23 years. I've never once been served pokeweed. I've never seen pokeweed on a menu. I've never heard of anyone's NC-native granny making pokeweed. I have mowed down many pokeweed plants, though.

Coward Complains

Mitch McConnell is gravely concerned about the US withdraw from Syria.

Somehow, he manages to work in three mentions of Obama, two mentions of Democrats, and zero mentions of the guy who is actually responsible for this mess.

I wonder why he'd do something like that?

I bet it's the same reason Senator Burr (R, NC) coughed up this one, on his Facebook page:

The Kurdish members of the Syrian Democratic Forces have been brave and stalwart partners in the fight against ISIS, and we should never abandon those who have fought beside us. ISIS may be debilitated and its territory dismantled, but the threat is not yet destroyed. Turkey’s actions will only empower our common enemy, further destabilizing the region and undermining hard-won gains. President Erdogan should cease his assault and withdraw Turkish troops from northern Syria immediately.

So weird that shit like this just spontaneously happens. If only we could identify a cause.

Another Message To You, Rudy

Perhaps I was premature with this.

Stop your messing around
Better think of your future
Time you straighten right out
Creating problems in town

Stop your fooling around
Time you straighten right out
Better think of your future
Else you’ll wind up in jail

Columbus Day

This is what Columbus would do for the rest of his days: sail around the Caribbean, murdering indigenous people. He died thinking that he had been doing all of this in India, never realizing he had set foot on lands that European navigators didn’t know existed at the time.

Over the next few hundred years, Columbus wasn’t well known until Washington Irving, who wrote The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, authored the first major English biography of Columbus in 1828. The positive story of Columbus — how he proved the Earth was round and discovered America — was embraced by Italian immigrants to America, who were in search of an American hero as they faced discrimination and persecution in the US.

“To help prove that Italians were a part of the American story, Italian Americans latched onto Irving’s version of Columbus, and promoted it like crazy,” Conover said. “And that’s the true story of how an incompetent and vicious nobody became the national hero we celebrate today.”

What a Day

Seven hours ago:

Two Ukrainian-born business partners, who showered Republican campaign committees with nearly $500,000 and dined with President Donald Trump at the White House, are the latest witnesses House Democrats want to question in their impeachment inquiry.

Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman helped Rudy Giuliani meet a key Ukrainian prosecutor as the president's personal lawyer sought to discredit Trump's political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden.

Parnas and Fruman, who were born in Ukraine when it was part of the Soviet Union but who now live in Florida, have become political players in recent years. In May 2018, Parnas posted pictures on Facebook of himself and Fruman with Trump in the White House and with his son, Donald Trump Jr., in California. That was the same month their company, Global Energy Producers LLC, was credited for giving $325,000 to a campaign committee that supports Trump's re-election.

Now:

The two men, who helped Giuliani investigate former vice president Joe Biden, were charged with campaign finance violations, according to a person familiar with the charges.
Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman have been under investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan.

updated:

According to the indictment, Parnas, Fruman and other defendants “conspired to circumvent the federal laws against foreign influence by engaging in a scheme to funnel foreign money to candidates for federal and state office so that the defendants could buy potential influence with the candidates, campaigns, and the candidates’ governments.”

...

Parnas has told The Post that he decided to get involved politically because he was a passionate supporter of Trump’s candidacy after growing up in New York and selling Trump condos in the city when Trump’s late father, Fred, was still running the Trump Organization.

...
Parnas, a 47-year-old former stockbroker who was born in Ukraine, has told The Washington Post that Giuliani is an attorney for the two men but declined to say what services he is providing them.

So much corruption, among people Trump knows.
