Freedom Of Expression

Q: On this issue of violence erupting after the controversial film, can you please speak to the argument of freedom of expression that has been raised too? There is obviously the agenda issue here at the United Nations of defamation of religion, and there is a lot of dispute over that. Maybe weigh in on this in terms of your perspective on how to move forward in some concrete ways, where you can have a balance of freedom of expression, yet at the same time obviously respect various religions. And also perhaps touch on issues of some Member States of this Organization that don’t even allow certain religions to even open up houses of worship within their country because the level of intolerance is so extreme. Can you please address that, as well?

SG [UN Sec General, Ban Ki-Moon]: All human beings have the inalienable right to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly. These are very fundamental rights. But, at the same time, this freedom of expression should not be abused by individuals. Freedom of expression should be and must be guaranteed and protected, when they are used for common justice, common purpose. When some people use this freedom of expression to provoke or humiliate some others’ values and beliefs, then this cannot be protected in such a way. So, my position is that freedom of expression, while it is a fundamental right and privilege, should not be abused by such people, by such a disgraceful and shameful act.

Um, no thank you.

This is one of those times when I realize how different the US is from most of the rest of the world. And I like it.

Feeling Like A Criminal

Noooooo!

Fiona Apple was arrested at a border stop in Texas yesterday ... after authorities claim they found hashish on the "Criminal" singer's tour bus ... TMZ has learned.

It all went down in Sierra Blanca, TX -- where stars like Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg and Armie Hammer have all been arrested for drugs in the past.

But apparently, Apple didn't learn from their mistakes ... and when her bus was stopped for inspection, cops turned up the hash -- a strong form of cannabis.

Cops say Apple was also in possession of a small amount of weed.

The 35-year-old singer was arrested for possession and is currently being held at Hudspeth County Jail.

We have tix to see her next Thursday!

Introducing The GM Roundup Tumor!

No, it's not a poorly-named SUV from America's struggling car maker, it's cancer!

The first animal feeding trial studying the lifetime effects of exposure to Roundup tolerant GM maize, and Roundup, the world's best-selling weedkiller, shows that levels currently considered safe can cause tumors and multiple organ damage and lead to premature death in laboratory rats, according to research published online today by the scientific journal Food and Chemical Toxicology.

Researchers found that rats fed on a diet containing NK603 Roundup tolerant GM maize, or given water containing Roundup at levels permitted in drinking water and GM crops in the US, died earlier than rats fed on a standard diet. They suffered mammary tumors and severe liver and kidney damage.

Sigh

Chick-fil-A Wraps It Up

Delicious news!

Chick-fil-A has agreed to stop funding groups with anti-same-sex marriage stances, according to a statement released Wednesday by LGBT advocacy group The Civil Rights Agenda.
...
"Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena." Chick-fil-A wrote in an emailed statement to NBC News.
...
According to the release by the CRA, the letter stated that chain's charitable wing “is now taking a much closer look at the organizations it considers helping, and in that process will remain true to its stated philosophy of not supporting organizations with political agendas.”

Awesome.

I admit, I finally caved myself this past weekend. I put it off for months, but I finally decided I had to have a "#1 with a Cherry Coke". It's my favorite Saturday lunch. I also own an iPhone (and probably other things made at Foxconn); I patronize a local jeweler who plays Limbaugh in the shop; I buy diamonds for my wife; I eat meat; I do not drive a hybrid; I don't avoid the local burger chain with the Bible stuff on their cups; I thought it was stupid and childish when wingnuts freaked out about the pizza guy who hugged Obama; and I don't bother to check the political positions and contributions of all the other businesses I patronize. I am really not much of an activist. Go ahead, take away my Liberal Cool Kids Club card.
