Monoculture
Weeks like this I realize how many of the blogs I like to visit use Disqus for comments - and just what a fail that is. Sure, it makes comment management easy for high-volume sites. But it obviously can not handle being the comment provider for half the blog-o-sphere.

Get The Fucker(s)
A suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings has been identified by authorities after analyzing video footage, CNN's John King reported on air Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Boston Globe reported that authorities have an image showing a suspect, but the report stopped short of saying the person's identity had been established.
King said he's been told by authorities that video footage from the Lord and Taylor department store and from a local Boston television station has led investigators to believe that they have "clearly identified" the individual who placed one of the explosive devices at the site of the second explosion. The department store on Boylston Street is located near the site of the second explosion.
Get em good.
Updates:
An arrest is imminent.
And, thirty seconds later:
An arrest has been made.
But now, CNN TV isn't sure, though CNN website still says an ARREST has been made. Other networks are equally conflicted.
And now, nobody has been arrested or is in custody.
Bah!

Hoo?
Pepper wouldn't go onto the back porch last night. She stood by the door, looking worried. And then I heard it: a long low "Hoooooo". A long-eared owl was lurking in our eastern acre.
I told Pepper that's why we don't let her outside. She ran into the kitchen to escape.

Lie To Me
I got a new DVD burner a few weeks back. I thought it would enjoy life on my desk, but apparently not: it lies to me.
If I tell iTunes to burn an album to CD, the burner goes through the motion: LED flashing, motor whirring, etc.. And it finishes without reporting any errors. And then iTunes shows the contents of the newly-burned CD. And if I use Windows Explorer to look at the disc, I can see the songs files. It looks like the process worked.
But if I then eject the disc and look at it, I don't see that telltale slightly-lighter band where the songs should be. It looks ... blank. And if I put the disc back in the burner, the burner grinds and coughs as if I inserted a blank disc. And if I then look at the disc with Explorer, Windows tells me the disc is blank and asks me what I want to do with it. This is the same disc that Windows just said was full of music.
And yes, the disc is actually blank: I can burn it again. And sometimes the contents will actually be written.
This is baffling.
