Shunnel?

The Norwegian government has backed an ambitious plan to create the world's first ship tunnel. But why has nobody tackled this engineering feat before?

At 45m high (148ft) and 36m (118ft) wide, the 1.7km (one mile) long Stad Ship Tunnel will be the only one of its kind - a passage through solid rock able to accommodate 16,000 tonne freight and passenger ships.

Ship canals have long been used to make journeys more direct and safer but the Stad peninsula is a mountainous divide, peaking at 645m, between the Norwegian Sea to the north and the North Sea to the south.

Am I wrong to think the waves and wind inside a tunnel like this would be insane? And wouldn't ships be smacking themselves against the walls?

Monoculture

Weeks like this I realize how many of the blogs I like to visit use Disqus for comments - and just what a fail that is. Sure, it makes comment management easy for high-volume sites. But it obviously can not handle being the comment provider for half the blog-o-sphere.

A suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings has been identified by authorities after analyzing video footage, CNN's John King reported on air Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Boston Globe reported that authorities have an image showing a suspect, but the report stopped short of saying the person's identity had been established.

King said he's been told by authorities that video footage from the Lord and Taylor department store and from a local Boston television station has led investigators to believe that they have "clearly identified" the individual who placed one of the explosive devices at the site of the second explosion. The department store on Boylston Street is located near the site of the second explosion.

Get em good.

Updates:
An arrest is imminent.

And, thirty seconds later:
An arrest has been made.

But now, CNN TV isn't sure, though CNN website still says an ARREST has been made. Other networks are equally conflicted.

And now, nobody has been arrested or is in custody.

Bah!
