Heh. I grew up in Rochester and somewhere have a really battered cassette of that Colorblind James album, which I purchased in St. Paul as a homesick college freshman. I remember seeing them playing at the Corn Hill festival in the “food court” somewhere between a barbecue stand and a pottery display. Most vividly remember the unusual blond stand-up bass.

CBJE… i went to college at RIT in the late 80’s. somehow i never got to see them live, even though they were constantly playing shows around town. i kick myself now.

You got there right around the time I left, then. I was EXTREMELY peripherally involved in the goofy hardcore scene around that time. Went to high school with a lot of the usual suspects.

    fieldfresh.

we played a bunch of shows with Standard Deviation, which was led by one of the guys from Hunger Artist, and a bunch with a straight-edge band called Foundation.

The world is small… I found your blog by following your URL from postings on Balloon Juice. I dug your Robyn Hitchcock blogging.

I usually say that Brooklyn is the center of the universe. But maybe Rochester is the magnetic center, or something.

    Tim Roy… name sounds familiar, but i can’t place it… ?

i’ve always dug Rochester – always thought we’d move back someday.

Tim was, for awhile, in Hunger Artist. My brother (the rock star of the family :) ) was in a band called Citadel, and another one called Evil Women but they might’ve broken up by the time you got there. I was just his geeky older sister. I have to admit I never deeply grokked hardcore as a style of music, other than that it was cathartic and easy to play. Not so easy listening.

I get the impression that Rochester’s improved a lot since I left in 88. I think the high-tech stuff coming out of RIT helped a lot. I’m still in touch with a few folks there via FB but don’t go back too often. Can’t really beat it for affordable decent housing stock.

ah yeah. that was my guess, but i couldn’t verify it anywhere (and that Rochester HC site is blocked here at work). there’s a video of him with Kookoo Boy out there… but that didn’t help much :)

i miss white hots the most.

Actually, I’d be interested in your opinion of Cat Stevens’ pre-Islam body of work (and his more recent stuff), if you have one.

i don’t know much about him, really. i know all the hits from the 70’s, of course – and i’ve always loved his voice. but i don’t think i know of anything from him other than the hits.

    do you recommend ?

  11. Ugh

The more recent stuff? I haven’t heard it and was hoping you would recommend (or not), the Newsweek article makes it sound like his most recent album is more like his 70s stuff, in which case I am inclined to buy it.

I have a fondness for his 70s stuff primarily because it was what my parents listened to a lot when I was a child (which is why I like Neil Diamond’s stuff from that era as well).

looks like you can get previews of all the news songs on AllMusic (Amazon too).

i’m always wary of new stuff from people who were popular so long ago. IMO rockers don’t age well (looking at you, Stones and Neil Young)
