Taughannock Falls

Taughannock is the highest falls east of the Rockies: well over 200 feet high. Taller than Niagra by 33 feet. It's just north of Ithaca, in the heart of NY wine country.

Having a hard time with the scale? Well, it's hard to see, but if you look in the lower-right corner of this last shot, there's a little observation platform almost obscured by the trees in the foreground. You can see the wall - it's about 4 feet high. There are people near the 'top' side of it - though they only show up here as a brownish smudge because they were so far away.

How are you defining “highest falls”? Upper Whitewater Falls in North Carolina is 411 ft.

i think the claim is that Taughannock is the largest single, uninterrupted drop (free-fall off the cliff, like the various falls at Niagra), while Whitewater Falls is a long series of smaller cascades (like Ithaca Falls).

Taughannock is one of the most impressive things around. I’ve seen Yosemite Falls, which is much higher but somehow doesn’t get me the same way. Would love to take a look at Niagara sometime.

Niagra’s wild because it’s just so enormous. my pics are just of the American falls, but that’s net even half of it – the Canadian side is even bigger.

Whoa. Taughannock and Ithaca Falls are a blast from my IC past. I always preferred Treman State Park. Went up to visit friends in November and took Mr. Jud to Taughannock– we watched a crow hassling some raptor or other in the bowl of space between the gorge walls and the waterfall.
