Name That Tune #5

It's Over! - Paige wins. And it's over. Over!

There are twenty song clips below, from twenty different songs, from twenty different artists. Same as before. But this time, the rules are different:

  1. Each song is a cover.
  2. You get 2 points if you name the song and the artist in the clip.
  3. You get 2 points if you name the song and the artist who originally performed the song.
  4. You get 1 extra point if you name both - so, there are a total of 5 points per song, and 100 points for all 20.
  5. Leave your answers in comments.
  6. Your comments will be hidden from everyone but you and me.
  7. The contest ends on Friday, November 28th, 11:59pm EST (GMT -5). I'll open up the comments and total up the points, then.
  8. The person with the most points wins a wonderful prize.

As before, I’m doing my first pass without any lookups. I hope I can go back and correct later.

    1. “Nevermind.” Originally by Nirvana, sounds like Evanescence here (though I’d be surprised if she were able to mock herself like this).
    2. “Mama Tried.” Originally by Waylon Jennings, I think (just heard it the other day). This sounds like the sloppy old Grateful Dead.
    3. “Big Yellow Taxi.” Originally by Joni Mitchell; this sounds like Bob Dylan.
    4. “Just My Imagination.” Originally by the Temptations.

    6. “All Along The Watchtower.” Penned by Bob Dylan, performed immortally by Jimi Hendrix.
    7. I’ve never heard this, but musically it sure reminds me of Jackson Browne.
    8. That’s Johnny Cash doing one of his Rick Rubin era covers. I’ll go ahead and guess on “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails, but I’ll get back to you on that.
    9. “Landslide,” originally by Fleetwood Mac, and surprisingly improved by the Dixie Chicks.
    10. “Come Together,” originally by the Beatles, presented here by Aerosmith for the hilariously bad film Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band.
    11. “Voodoo Chile,” Stevie Ray Vaughan doing an impressive imitation of Jimi Hendrix.

    16. “Sweet Jane,” a nice take on the Velvet Underground original by the Cowboy Junkies.
    17. “Ring of Fire,” originally by Johnny Cash.

    20. “Satisfaction” — nobody does a Rolling Stones cover like Devo. Nobody does any kind of cover like Devo.

I am so bad at this. All the covers/originals have the same name:

COVER ARTIST – SONG NAME / ORIGINAL ARTIST

    1. Tori Amos – Smells Like Teen Spirit / Nirvana

    6. Jimi Hendrix – All Along The Watchtower / Bob Dylan

    8. Johny Cash – ? / ?

    10. ? – Come Together / The Beatles

    14. Bauhaus – Ziggy Stardust / David Bowie

    17. Johny Cash – Ring Of Fire / ?

Brilliant quiz mate. Gillian Welch doing Black Star or Radiohead covering Nobody Does It Better would of made my day. he he.

  3. russell

Cris probably has all the easy stuff scooped up already but here’s what I got.

    1. Tori Amos “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, originally Nirvana
    2. Grateful Dead “Mama Tried”, originally Merle Haggard.
    6. Jimi doing Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower”
    7. Think that’s Linda Ronstadt doing Zevon’s “Poor Poor Pitiful me”
    8. The mighty mighty Johnny Case covering Trent Reznor’s (NIN’s) “Hurt”
    15. Warren Zevon (with the Hindu Love Gods IIRC) covering Prince’s “Raspberry Beret”
    16. Cowboy Junkies covering Lou Reed’s “Sweet jane”
    17. Social D kicking the living shite out of Johnny Cash’s “Ring Of Fire”. Actually, Cash had the hit, I think June wrote the song.
    20. Devo, the pride of Akron, covering the Stone’s “Satisfaction”

Big fun. thanks cleek, I needed a fun break!

  4. russell

11 sounds so much like Hendrix doing “Voodoo Child” that it must be Stevie Ray. Nobody else gets (got) that close to Hendrix’s sound.

  5. russell

5 is Petty doing Buffalo Springfield’s “Rock and Roll Star”. Took me a minute to figure out it was Petty, but the weird strangly tenor voice with a drawl gave it away.

  6. Ugh

  8. cleek

looking good so far, overall, y’all.

only #12 remains completely untouched. and a couple have been guessed at, but the guesses are missing enough info to get points.

a couple of hints … tomorrow.

  10. mark

    ?
    Big Yellow Taxi, Bob Dylan
Even the Losers, Tom Petty (that may not even be a cover, but thats what I hear)
All Along the Watchtower, Jimi Hendrix Experience
    ?
    Hurt, Johnny Cash
    Landslide, Dixie Chicks
    Come Together, Aerosmith
Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Stevie Ray Vaughn?
Van Halen, Where Have All the Good TImes Gone

    Raspberry Beret, Hindu Love Gods
    Sweet Jane, Cowboy Junkies
    Mama Kin, Guns N Roses
    Satisfaction, Devo

  11. cleek

no, it’s not over. and because the comments are hidden, late doesn’t matter.

but you’re missin out on half the points, mark!

i’m sure you know ’em, but you gotta name the band doing the cover and the band who did the original.

  12. mark

I actually read the rules this time. Info added.

Smells Like Teen Spirit, Tori Amos – Nirvana

Big Yellow Taxi, Bob Dylan – Joni Mitchell
Even the Losers, Tom Petty – hhehhehee Tom Petty.
All Along the Watchtower, Jimi Hendrix Experience – Bob Dylan

    Hurt, Johnny Cash – NIN
    Landslide, Dixie Chicks – Fleetwood
    Come Together, Aerosmith – Beatles
Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Stevie Ray Vaughn? – Hendrix
Van Halen, Where Have All the Good TImes Gone – Kinks
    Nirvana, Turnaround
Ring of Fire, Social Distortion or Bad Religion, I get them confused. – Johnny Cash
Raspberry Beret, Hindu Love Gods – Prince
Sweet Jane, Cowboy Junkies – Velvet Underground
Mama Kin, Guns N Roses – Aerosmith
    Satisfaction, Devo – Stones.

  13. cleek

here’s how it stands right now:

    Paige: 71
    Russell: 69
    Mark: 67
    Cris: 53
    Rob C: 19
    Ugh: 4

full partial credit has been given at least once, for all of them.

  14. Rob Caldecott

    Based on your hints:

    12. ? – Where Have All The Good Times Gone? / The Kinks
    19. Sounds like Guns ‘n’ Roses, but that’s all I have.

  15. Cris

Holy crap, I guess I better add some of the ones I had to look up.

    5. “So You Want to be a Rock & Roll Star,” a crummy Byrds song covered by Tom Petty.
    7. “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” by Warren Zevon, performed by Linda Ronstadt. Nice choice here, by the way: a Google for “credit to his gender” turns up pages of red herrings.
    12. “Where Have All The Good Times Gone” originally by the Kinks, played here by Van Halen.
    15. “Raspberry Beret” by Prince, of course, covered by Warren Zevon.
    19. “Mama Kin,” Guns N Roses covering Aerosmith.

…but I’ll consider 53 to be my true ceiling and bow down to the knowledge of Mark, Russell, and Paige.

  16. Cris

Oh for crying out loud, I used the album title, not the song title, on #1, didn’t I. “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” *headdesk*

  17. cleek

want me to count that one?

Edit: actually, i already counted it. though i wouldn’t have if i’d made another pass over the answers and caught it.
