i’m trying to decide if i dare write a post declaring London Calling to be the most overrated record in history or not… :)
Pavement – Here
oh Pavement. how i heart you.
London Calling isn’t my favourite Clash record – I like the first two albums much better (especially the second, ‘Give ‘Em Enough Rope’ which was panned at the time because – shock – it was too well produced!
However, London Calling is a real mixture of musical styles, which, for a punk band, was pretty out-there back ’79 I ‘spose. Rolling Stone declaring it ‘album of the 80s’ was a bit much really.

Later –
mm. i do like some Dave Holland.
i don’t recognize most of the rest :)
Holland has had some of the best small jazz bands around for the last 15 or 20 years. The man is happening.
Beenie Man is kind of Jamaican hip-hop reggae.
Betty Carter is a long-time jazz diva, now sadly gone.
Culture is straight up Studio One style reggae.
Salif Keita is a Malian singer. Some of his stuff is kind cheesy-pop, but lots of it is great.
Do you know Fela Kuti? If James Brown was from Nigeria and was a lot more pissed off, he’d be Fela Kuti. His drummer was Tony Allen, who’s still around, and still killing.
The Yo-Yo track is from “Obrigado Brazil”. A concept that could have gone terribly wrong, but turns out really well.
Ma’s a very interesting guy to me. If you have a chance to check out the DVD series he did called “Inspired By Bach”, it’s worth a look. All collaborations with other artists based on the Bach cello suites. The collaboration with Mark Morris is especially good.
A buddy of mine, guitar player, played a wedding. Ma was there as a guest and had been asked to play (!?!). He recruited my buddy to play the guitar accompaniment (!?!?!?!?!). Ma met with him for a few minutes before they had to hit, talked through the piece, afterwards was very, and sincerely, grateful for my friend’s help. A genuinely nice guy.
Hey if you don’t know Kuti or Keita I think you’d dig both.
Later –
thanks for the tips. i’ll check out some of those African bands. my dad goes to the Montreal Jazz Fest every year and always comes back talking about all these great African bands.
i was snooping around iTunes and saw a couple of Yo-Yo Ma bluegrass/classical hybrid records. here’s one with Alison Krauss and James Taylor guesting. i’m tempted to listen, but a little afraid, at the same time :)
We have the earlier one of these, “Appalachian Waltz”. It’s a little bit NPR-ish, if you know what I mean, but the players are all freaking great, and they all have big ears, so it works.
It might be worth a listen.
