Five, describe!

  1. Louis Armstrong - Muggles. Not terrible, but lacks the magic of some of his others.
  2. Smaller Animals - Lonesone Jangler.
Compact Audio Player Error! The mp3 file URL that you entered in the "fileurl" parameter looks to be invalid. Please enter a valid URL of the audio file.

Needs a lead. Why did I leave it in that state?

  3. Vampire Weekend - Obvious Bicycle. A skeletal, subdued song like this seems like strange choice for an album opener. But it's a nice song anyway.
  4. The Police - Message In A Bottle. Now that's how you start an album!
  5. Love And Rockets - It Could Be Sunshine. Another good opener! Better, because it's not worn out like that Police tune.

Participation is encouraged!

Green Day – Boulevard of Broken Dreams
I find this chorus eminently singable.

Belle & Sebastian – Wrapped Up In Books
There’s a serious 60’s vibe to the opening guitar line here, but I can’t put my finger on what exactly it reminds me of.

    Talitha MacKenzie – Fionnaghuala
MacKenzie’s Spoirad album contains a number of efforts to synthesize modern pop with traditional Celtic tunes, and in most cases I appreciate the sentiment more than the execution. This one would work a lot better for me if she didn’t try to do that weird reggae rap thing.

Florence + The Machine – Never Let Me Go
Like most of Ceremonials, this is a little too over-produced, too lush with a bit too much echo. But also like the rest of the album, it’s still a pretty good listen. I just wish the whole track was as sparse as the intro.

Branford Marsalis – The Ballad of Chet Kincaid
The Quincy Jones-composed theme song to the 1960’s Bill Cosby Show. As such, it has a nice, light feel that is made moreso by its place in the album (immediately following a free-form “burnout”), but still makes room for some signature off-the-rails Branford wanderings.

reminds me of the Flamin Groovies, or YLT in Flamin Groovies mode. but maybe something else, too.
