Five, describe!
- Smaller Animals - the first decision. Me again. When I was making this tape, I was messing around with drop-D tuning, and found a riff that I liked. I liked it so much I ended up writing three different tunes based on it. This is the first of them.
- Replacements - Mr Whirly. A crazy little blend of "The Twist" and "Oh! Darling".
- Polvo - Titan Up. This one's not on YouTube, so, this link is to a different tune, also from the "This Eclipse" EP. It's classic grindy, twisty Polvo.
- Jesus Lizard - Monkey Trick. On the other side of the noise rock niche, avoiding all of the pretty stuff that Polvo incorporated: The Jesus Lizard. I can appreciate them, but I'm not liable to sit down and listen to a whole album's worth of them. A little goes a long way.
- Buddy & Julie Miller - Holding Up The Sky. A pretty tune. He's a Nashville session pro and she's a prolific singer/songwriter. Mrs and I learned this once, played it twice, and forgot about it.
What you got?

1. XTC – Dear Madam Barnum
really nice late period XTC. I didn’t really appreciate XTC other than their “hits” until later (though I had Skylarking (on cassette!) because of “Dear God” in high school, but who didn’t?). I always loved this album though, and I have come to think of XTC as one of the finest pop singles band there ever was.
2.Eminem – The Real Slim Shady
When I first moved to Norway I worked for a time in a fish processing plant. Gutting, sorting and boxing up salmon. At the time we didn’t have ipods and stuff so we got radio headphones, not only to protect the ears but to have something to listen to. This song was HUGE then and was seemingly on once an hour, usually the uncensored version. So this song will forever remind me of fish.
3.The The – Good Morning Beautiful
This song…The The deserved to be 10 times bigger and more successful and even known than they (he) are. And this song has Johnny Marr, what more can you ask for?
4. The National – Lemonworld
I don’t think there is any other recent band that has so many songs that make me close my eyes and just soak it in. This song is no different. Love them.
5. Frightened Rabbit – The Modern Leper
Fitting somehow that I get these two bands back to back because I found them at the same time, from a list from a friend. Frightened Rabbit is another one of my recent favorites and this song exemplifies what I love so much about them: The songs that build, his bizarre, cracking, Scottish accented voice, songs about weird things and gratuitous profanity.
Making Thanksgiving dinner this coming weekend, a week late but not bad considering we skipped it last year. My stuffing can kick your stuffing’s ass!
The The – Good Morning Beautiful
adore that album (Mind Bomb)
