Start Your iPods

Random five, describe!

  1. CSN - You Don't Have To Cry. I really like the tune here - it's got an unusual vibe to it. Though not really unusual for CSN. I wish I knew enough music theory to figure out what it is that gives them that sound.
  2. Rolling Stones - Lies (live, 78). Least favorite. Terrible sound. Ron Wood's (I think) guitar is constantly feeding-back. And, like all live Stones, it feels rushed. Jagger just kindof shouts lyrics, live. Maybe if he stopped running around, he'd have the breath to hold a note.
  3. Bauhaus - Dark Entries. Sure, it's a stereotypical Bauhaus song, but it's the kind of thing Bauhaus did so well.
  4. George Shearing & John Pizzarelli - Lulu's Back In Town. Nicely done, but this song will always belong to Leon Redbone, IMO.
  5. Smiths - Still Ill (Peel). Ah, that classic harmonica intro/outro - which has nothing to do with the rest of the song. Johnny Marr kills it here - so busy, but so good.

I’m going to go with a random 10 from my new Amazon Cloud player – I signed up for their service and uploaded all my songs this weekend and am keen to give it a spin. Here goes…

    1. Skunk Anansie – Brazen (Weep)
    2. Duran Duran – Serious
    3. U2 – The Playboy Mansion
    4. The Clash – London Calling
    5. These New Puritans – Fire-Power
    6. Carpenters – It’s Going To Take Some Time
    7. The Beatles – I Am The Walrus
    8. Genesis – Throwing It All Away
    9. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Yeah! New York
    10. Graham Coxon – Do What You’re Told To

Yay! And no iTunes required! Which is awesome in itself.

The Amazon service isn’t perfect but as Google still haven’t launched their music service in the UK I didn’t have much choice (no way am I using the Apple iCloud service as it’s built into iTunes, enough said). I could bore you all to death with my exposure to the Amazon service so far but … it’s OK. And you can upload 250,000 songs for £21.99 a year which is excellent. And you can play your music on up to 10 devices (Android or iOS) or via any browser. Which seals the deal.

    1. Sea and Cake – Don’t Bother
Can’t find a video for this one and I am far too tired and lazy to upload to dropbox or something. This one is really mellow, to the point where about half way through you are on verge of just giving up on the whole thing and then for some reason you stick with it and it kind of doesn’t really go anywhere but is somehow interesting at the same time.

    2. The Plimsouls – A Million Miles Away
Classic, classic power pop song. Nothing really to say about this other than it is just so awesome, and will end up on every mp3/music player I ever own until I die.

    3. Queens of the Stone Age – Sick Sick Sick
Good lord, this one rocks so hard. I saw them do this live a couple summers ago when they opened for the Foo Fighters and they pummeled this song. Strobes going and it looked like complete anarchy on stage. Sometimes Queens just hit the spot.

    4. The Cure – Fascination Street
One of my favorite songs on the last Cure album I really, really loved. They have some decent stuff after this but this album was the last of their greats. I am pretty sure I thought this was the greatest song ever recorded at the time. I still love it, especially that chugging bass and drums. Excuse me while I listen to the whole thing. Again.

    5. Blur – Beetlebum
A song about heroin. Has anyone done a compilation album of all the songs written about heroin? This is a good track, I like his dreamy vocals.

This was a pretty awesome 5.

hmmm. i wonder how many there are?

      V.U. – Heroin
      Lucinda Williams – Essence
      Laid Back – White Horse

  3. The Modesto Kid

    1. Creepers Gonna Creep (You Blew My Mind) by ThnxCya: this is the Original Minecraft Song and was apparently uploaded to my library by my Minecraft-fanatic daughter. I want no part of it. (Nice title though.) Sort of a silly light British pop tune with Minecraft-relevant lyrics.

    2. Fanny Hill by Old and in the Way: banjo and fiddle and a little guitar.

    3. It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue by Bob Dylan: I haven’t listened to this song in a long time, somehow. (I think I sang it not too long ago though.) It is one of my favorites.

    4. The Beauty of Earl’s Court by Robyn Hitchcock: psychedelic. An easy track to forget about but always nice to come back to.

    5. Baby, Let Me Lay it on You by Gary Davis: Last time I heard this song I had not heard Baby Gramps.

And now back to the Mountain Station set I’m mixing for Blow Up Radio.
