Start Your iPods

Five songs, shuffled, described.

  1. Pretenders - Sabre Dance (live). This is the song that everyone knows from cartoons. No, not Powerhouse, the other one. It's just frantic drums and screaming guitar with Chrissy Hynde singing bits of the words to "Stop You Sobbing" here and there. It's from the extended re-issue of their first record. Link is to a live "Needle And The Damage Done".
  2. Fleetwood Mac - Did You Ever Love Me. A perfect example of an upbeat Christine McVie soft-rock love song: she singing a bright sweet melody over a gently rocking base. The steel drums are a bit distracting, but otherwise, it's a decent tune. I like the guitar line.
  3. Sonic Youth - Catholic Block. This song kills. Love this sprawling, twisting monster.
  4. The Sea And Cake - You Beautiful Bastard. A long, slow mellow thing. It's in no hurry, as it glides farther and farther into the Golden Land of Mellow. I like it, but I can understand why some might not.
  5. Led Zeppelin - Dancing Days. Love this, too. Page's elastic guitar is just so cool - that intro riff, especially. And then Jones' slippery organ gets on that lick about halfway through - very slinky.

OK. You try it.

Got busy doing nothing this week but watching the Olympics. Love being off in the summer.

    1. Nitzer Ebb – Godhead
Good old fashioned industrial dance. I like the heavy drums and I really like when the guitar kicks in and it gets really fast. Something to be played LOUD.

    2. Pennywise – Salvation
Newish but good old fashioned thrash punk. Sounds like Bad Religion circa 1990.

    3. Talking Heads – Psycho Killer Live (’81)
No real need to talk about this song, classic in every way. The video features Adrian Belew (been listening to a buttload of post ’80 Crimson lately)

    4. Pearl Jam – Life Wasted
A newer song from them. I like it, sounds like their older stuff. Surprised the random that came up wasn’t live as I have a bunch of live stuff from them. They are a fantastic live band.

    5. The Rolling Stones – Tumbling Dice
Nice boogie-woogie blues song from the Stones. My parents used to play this album a lot which is most of my memory for this song. Sunday mornings, cooking pancakes and the Stones or Elton or Floyd or The Who spinning on the turntable in the living room. Kind of a nice memory.

That is a killer Sonic Youth song. Annoying Fleetwood Mac song (those steel drums just kill it). Nice Sea & Cake song. I even got my wife into them, one of her current favorites.

i went through a thing a few weeks back where i only listened to Red. the song, not the album. i can play it now… which is quite a useless achievement… nobody is ever going to want to hear that.
