Shuffle.
Five songs.
Describe, thusly:
- Louis Armstrong - St James Infirmary. The ancient jazz standard; and perhaps its most-famous version.
- Bob Dylan - Talkin' World War III Blues - Really early footage of Dylan at that link. Singing to the roughneck workingmen in something like a lumberjack lodge.
- Pink Floyd - One Slip. That bass, that bass, where have I heard that bass sound before? Oh yeah... it's Tony Levin.
- Bill Monroe - Linda Lou. High and lonesome.
- Smaller Animals - Mr Soul. Yeah, it's the Buffalo Springfield classic, as done by ... me. I don't have this on-line anywhere, and I'm not inclined to post it because, while I quite like the music, I don't really dig my voice, so... I'll link to something else: Interstitial Love Song.
What you got?

You got a great shuffle there. I enjoyed listening to all of them. The Dylan video is so cool — I think it’s staged, but it represents something true, and it’s kind of amazing to me how readily the working men of the day accepted and enjoyed entertainment from a bohemian weirdo like that. Seems like it would be a harder sell today.
1. W.A. Mozart – Violin Concerto No. 3 in G, III. Rondo
Beautiful from start to finish. The Andante passage was featured to great effect in Peter Weir’s film Master and Commander.
2. Frank Zappa – Dirty Love
I’ve grown a bit weary of Zappa, and this one is in the sophomoric vein that contributes so much to that. But the lyrics are just clever enough to still be fun and the groove makes it pretty easy to keep it going til the end.
3. Beatles – I Feel Fine (Live)
In the last few years this has risen to be one of my very favorite Fab Four tunes. I love the interplay of the Carl Perkins-style guitar riff with the Ray Charles latin drum beat — and what a cymbal ride! This version is from the “Live at the BBC” album, so the production is a little less polished, but the performance is nearly indistinguishable from the studio recording.
4. Christophe Heral – In the Beginning (Beyond Good & Evil OST)
Great game, when is the damned sequel coming out? One of the best game soundtracks as well, though this track suffers from too much cinematic noise and dialogue.
5. Klezmatics – Doyna
Nice Romanian melody played on the clarinet by David Krakauer. Works a little better in album context, where it’s followed immediately by an upbeat party tune.
i know almost nothing about classical music, but that Mozart piece is good. will seek out more. like that Klezmatics piece – i’m a sucker for a clarinet.
Hey! Me and the missus are doing St James Infirmary.
Heh heh heh, braggin’!
