FYWP. I'll just type it again. You can't beat me!

Five. Describe.

  1. Madeleine Peyroux - River Of Tears. A slow sleepy languid mellow-pop tune: Cassandra Wilson's poppier moments, everything Joss Stone has ever done. Fitting for a sleepy gray Monday AM. Would also work on a lazy afternoon at a seaside wine bar.
  2. ZZ Top - La Grange. And speaking of the beach... there's a town called La Grange in central NC which we pass through every time we drive to the beach. Do you think we can get pass the "Welcome To La Grange" sign without a "uh how how how"? Of course we can't; we're only human.
  3. Wilco - What Light. Meh. The verses are OK, but the chorus is "There's a light / what light", over and over and over and over and over. Sometimes he changes "what" to "white". So white.
  4. Black Sabbath - Solitude. So quiet it's almost silent. There's a flute, a piano, a restrained guitar and something going backwards. Ozzy sings this so quietly (and so well, frankly) it's hard to believe it's even him. I had to look it up, to verify.
  5. Adrian Belew - Of Bow And Drum (live). This is his Power Trio's version, from the "Side Four" release. Good stuff: a nice melodic song, festooned with screechy Belew solo bits. The Rockpalast video linked here is pretty sweet, too.

OK?
Your turn.

Looks like there will be a taste of summer this week here in Wiltshire. The Olympic torch is passing by my house on Wednesday too. Which is a once in a lifetime event I guess.

    1. Pink Floyd – Comfortably Numb
Great track from The Wall. Typical Floyd.

    2. Diana Ross + The Supremes – You Can’t Hurry Love
My mum is a big Supremes fan and I have fond memories of her playing their records when I was a little boy. Phil Collins can fuck off.

    3. Oasis – Fade In/Out
From 1997’s bloated cocaine-dusted disappointment that was ‘Be Here Now’. Although listening to that album now it doesn’t sound too bad. Still far too many guitar tracks though.

    4. Radiohead – Optimistic
From 2000’s “Kid A”. It has guitars! Drop D tuned Rickenbackers actually.

    5. Graham Coxon – Spectacular
Opening track from 2004’s ‘Happiness in Magazines’ which until recently was my favourite Coxon record.

Germany next week on business. Looking forward to it, apart from all the dicking about at the airport which is just so fucking tiring.

    Nice graphic!
    1. “Roll On, Buddy” by Luther Strong. Before there was bluegrass.
    2. “(A man’s gotta know his limitations) Briggs” by the Venus 3, a fantastic version of same which is apparently the album version — I have not listened to it in a while and it sounds completely fresh.
    3. “Oh My Love” by the Folkadelics. I’m not sure what to make of the band’s name, it doesn’t really seem to go with their music. But the music is fun.
    4. “Broken Hearted Blues” by Lightnin Hopkins
    5. “Book of Love” by the Soft Boys. I once made epic use of this lyric in a blog comments thread, but I have forgotten where or I would link it. I love the Soft Boys a capella numbers.
