  1. Them Crooked Vultures - Spinning In Daffodils. I can't tell one Josh Homme project from another. Everything he does sounds the same to me. I like it, but he has such a distinctive guitar and vocal style and it completely dominates everything he gets near.
  2. Faces - Open To Ideas. A pretty standard 70's soft rock love song. Might as well be an Eagles song. Skippable.
  3. Nod - I'm Something New. This reminds me of The Modern Lovers, a tiny bit. A kind of shambling Frankenstein version of "I'm Straight", maybe. It's probably not my favorite Nod song, but I don't hate it, dog.
  4. Norah Jones - The Nearness Of You. A no-nonsense piano and vocal jazz standard. Jones is very good at this kind of thing. Reminds me of drinking wine in the afternoon near the shore (because this is the kind of stuff wine bars like to play).
  5. Pink Floyd - Pow R Toc H. Tinkling psychedelia. Though I like the strange melodies in this one, the song as a whole never quite comes together for me.

Et tu?

Back from a weekend in Essex. What does iTunes have for me?

Blur – Country Sad Ballad Man
Enjoyable little number from the bands 1997 self-titled LP – their second best record in my opinion (after the superb ’13’). Starts acoustic, tunes electric and features what sounds like a glockenspiel. Sounds like a Graham Coxon-penned number to me.

The Strokes – You’re So Right
From their latest album ‘Angles’ and, well this is a weird one – I don’t really like what they’ve done to Julian’s vocals at all but it has a memorable hook and the guitars sound pretty good towards the end. The whole album is too new to my ears so I have yet to form much of an opinion about it as a whole body of work. I don’t think there will be much new material from this band as by all accounts they pretty much hate each other (and Kings of Leon seem to be headed down the same road).

    The National – England
Lovely song from 2010’s best album. I hope a new album is released soon as there aren’t many bands out there that excite me like this. This tune takes a few listens so you may need to be patient with it. Not sure what the song is meant to be about – the lyrics are the usual National fare but it mentions England so it’s gotta be good right?

David Bowie – The Man Who Sold The World
If I hear one more person say this is a Nirvana song then I’m going on a killing spree. This is a great song and features that memorable Mick Ronson intro. And it’s better than the Nirvana cover in my opinion. So there.

    Nena – 99 Red Balloons
I loved this song when it came out and it still causes a nostalgia bomb to go off in my head every time I hear it. It’s 1984 and it’s the middle of the Cold War. Enough said (oh, the band were from West Germany and I’ll never forget that Nena had hairy armpits … which was all us boys talked about at school for WEEKS). The whole Cold War thing was a big deal for the town I grew up in as there was a USAF base on the outskirts housing 96 nuclear-tipped cruise missiles. Back to the office tomorrow. Joy.
