Start Your iPods

After a long break, the iPod gets to start a work week on a Monday. And that means I get to tell you what it started with...

  1. Silver Jews - Living Waters. The iPod loves some Silver Jews.
  2. Hinkley - Endless Probe, Secret REsult
  3. Derek & The Dominos - Little Wing. A thoroughly unnecessary cover.
  4. Tortoise - Along The Banks Of Rivers
  5. Nick Drake - Pink Moon
  6. Rogue Wave - You Read My Mind
  7. REM - Burning Down. The last four songs fit together well.
  8. Van Halen - D.O.A. . I have an old vinyl copy of VHII and there's a huge skip in the middle of this song. Today, for the first time in 20 years, I heard the 5 seconds after the first chorus. My life is complete.
  9. The Cure - Play for Today
  10. Elliot Smith - Junk Bond Trader

Thus concludes this edition of Start Your iPods.

  7. 3d's - Beautiful Things. This happens to be the 1st song on the iPod, alphabetically. When it comes up first thing Monday AM, I know it's because I forgot to hit Shuffle.
  8. Doc Watson - Doc's Guitar. Sounds like someone turned the tape speed up 2x. Damn this guy was good.
  9. Robyn Hitchcock - One L
  10. Neil Young - Cripple Creek Ferry. Mercifully short.
  11. Bone-us : Four Tet - Pockets. From Flux-Rad's 2006 Mixed Tape.

What the fuck will we start with this week?

  1. DJ Krush - Bypath 2. A quick little thing from my favorite Japanese trip-hop turntablist.
  2. Stereolab - Ping Pong. Get down with the feel-good joys of Marxist socio-political theory!
  3. Talking Heads - Psycho Killer. Live.
  4. Velvet Underground - Femme Fatale. I'll always prefer REM's version.
  5. Elliot Smith - Independence Day. Future butterfly / Gonna spend the day / higher than high / You'll be beautiful confusion.
  6. Green Day - Burnout. I'm not growing up / I'm just burning out.
  7. Breeders - Only In 3's. What's better than Kim Deal ? Kim Deal and her twin sister.
  8. Sea And Cake - Station In The Valley. Ahhh... soothing, blissful, early S&C.
  9. Led Zeppelin - Ozone Baby. Not bad, for Coda.
  10. The Anomoanon - Tongue and Heart. I simply don't like the word "tongue".

Up until those last two, it was looking to be a great 10.

Will the iPod surprise me, or will it play the same old crap...?

  1. The Beatles - I'm a Loser
  2. The Boys of the Lough - Sally Monroe. Irish folk music! And me without a Guinness.
  3. Alison Krauss & U.S. - Another Day Another Dollar
  4. Harald Johnson, et al - Colours of Mercy. Scandanavian jazz, baby.
  5. Broken Social Scene - It's All Gonna Break

  8. Robert Johnson - Phonograph Blues
  9. Radiohead - The Tourist
  10. Elliot Smith - Alameda
  11. Bonus : Neutral Milk Hotel - Holland, 1945. Love this song.
And here's where your mother sleeps
And here is the room where your brothers were born
      Indentions in the sheets
Where their bodies once moved but don't move anymore
And it's so sad to see the world agree
That they'd rather see their faces fill with flies
All when I'd want to keep white roses in their eyes

Mostly surprising. El yay!

(and this is post #1234 for Cleek)

Start Your iPods

This week, the iPod decides the best way to start the work week is with:

  1. Elliot Smith - Strung Out Again. The whole album sits in the shadow of his suicide; it's difficult to hear the songs without thinking of it.
  2. Replacements - Willpower
  3. Yo La Tengo - 3 Blocks From Groove Street
  4. El Cuarto de Tula - Buena Vista Social Club
  5. The Cure - Descent. Yummy B-side instrumental from the Faith era.
  6. The Beatles - Birthday
  7. Pavement - Conduit For Sale (live). Grossly humane, and frankly, quite un-dirty.
  8. The Libertines - Radio America
  9. Smaller Animals - 53
  10. Unrest - Food & Drink Synthsizer. meh.

And so it begins...

Start Your iPods

This, the last full week of October, starts with:

  2. Belle & Sebastian - Me And The Major
  3. Alison Krauss & U.S. - Find My Way Back To My Heart
  4. Beastie Boys - Flute Loop
  5. Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To. So loud, for such a weak song.
  6. Steve Malkmus & The Jicks - The Poet And The Witch (live)
  7. Steve Malkmus & The Jicks - Witch Mountain Bridge. Well, that's quite a coincidence.
  8. Elvis Costello - Sleepless Nights. He's going to be at Merlefest next year. Sweet.
  9. SpeedQueen - living through the ether. Hey Joe.
  10. Wilhelm Kempff - Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata

...I wish there was more Nick Drake.
