Today In Irony

A hitchhiker researching a book on "The Kindness of America" is currently recovering in hospital after a gun-toting truck driver game him a small donation of some searing hot lead.

Ray Dolin, was hitching on Highway 2 in Montana on Saturday as part of a project to produce a memoir on the great things about the open road in the big country.

Dolin was sitting on his backpack, just west of of the town of Glasgow early Saturday evening when a pickup truck slowed down.

However, rather than extending the offer of a ride, the driver extended a gun out of the window and shot Dolin in the arm.

Senior Week

Usually, I don't think about it. But once in a while I'll read something like this, and realize that I am definitely not cut out to be a parent. Whew.

I mean, I didn't behave much differently than any of these kids - except there was no 'club' scene within 100 miles of our town; we just just hung out in the streets and in the woods - so I know it's a survivable thing. But I just don't think I'd be good at dealing with it if I had a teenage kid of my own.

Unlucky Number

At age 49, Junior Alexander Guy got his first cell phone last month. The calls started immediately.

Strangers called at all hours. Some were insulting. Others angry. Sometimes, they threatened him.

"You murderer!"

"You deserve to die!"

By Day 2 he figured out what was going on: T-Mobile had given him the phone number formerly used by George Zimmerman, the Neighborhood Watch volunteer who fatally shot Trayvon Martin in February.

The number — 407-435-2400 — was the one Zimmerman spelled out to a police dispatcher in a recorded call the night of the shooting that has since been widely circulated by news organizations and is available on the Internet.

I suppose the moral is: don't share passwords across sites because odds are good at least one of them will leak passwords.

That precaution would be a lot easier for me to practice if that didn't mean memorizing 100 separate passwords.
