Downward Facing Fuck You, Eh?

Held inside a dark Canadian (Calgarian, to be exact, in case you're already packing your mat) bar, rage yoga classes swap water and quiet for beer and heavy metal. Founded and led by Lindsay Istace, "rage yoga is like regular yoga...only with more swearing and shenanigans," according to the group's Facebook page. The goal? "To attain good health and to become zen as f"ck," says Istace's site. Sign up and you'll receive tickets for two free draft pints at the bar.

Feminist Glaciology

Glaciers, gender, and science: A feminist glaciology framework for global environmental change research

II Why feminist glaciology?
Feminist glaciology asks how knowledge related to glaciers is produced, circulated, and gains credibility and authority across time and space. It simultaneously brings to the forefront glacier knowledge that has been marginalized or deemed ‘outside’ of traditional glaciology. It asks how glaciers came to be meaningful and significant (through what ontological and epistemological process), as well as trying to destabilize underlying assumptions about ice and environment through the dismantling of a host of boundaries and binaries. The feminist lens is crucial given the historical marginalization of women, the importance of gender in glacier related knowledges, and the ways in which systems of colonialism, imperialism, and patriarchy co-constituted gendered science.

VII Conclusions Ice is not just ice.
The dominant way Western societies understand it through the science of glaciology is not a neutral representation of nature. The feminist glaciology framework draws attention to those who dominate and frame the production of glaciological knowledge, the gendered discourses of science and knowledge, and the ways in which colonial, military, and geopolitical domination co-constitute glaciological knowledge. Even in a globalized age where the place of women and indigenous people has improved markedly in some parts of the world, masculinist discourses continue to dominate, in subtle and determinative ways. Feminist glaciology advocates for a shift of preoccupations in research, policy, and public perceptions fromthe physical and seemingly natural, to a broader consideration of ‘cryoscapes’, the human, and the insights and potentials of alternative ice narratives and folk glaciologies.

The fuck?

The Big Germ

A group of West Virginia lawmakers got sick last weekend after drinking raw milk to celebrate passing a raw milk-related bill, but the state delegate who distributed it insists the unpasteurized milk wasn't to blame.State Del. Scott Cadle (R) told the Charleston Gazette-Mail that people got sick because the Capitol building "is a big germ."

Bacon: the Other White Heat

Bacon is fattening because it contains a lot of chemical energy tied up in its proteins, and especially in its fat. You can release that energy either by digesting it or by burning it with a healthy supply of oxygen. The challenge isn't creating the heat; it's engineering a bacon structure strong enough to withstand the stress of a 5,000°F bacon plasma flame.

I used prosciutto (Italian for "expensive bacon") because it is a superior engineering grade of meat. I wrapped slices of it into thin tubes and baked them overnight in a warm oven to drive off all the water. Then I bundled seven of those together, wrapped them in additional slices, and baked the bundle again until it was hard and dry.

Holland 1945

Colbert's band played Neutral Milk Hotel's "Holland, 1945" during their breaks on Thursday's (IIRC) show. My eyes almost popped out of my head in amazement.

Ku Klux Klan titles and vocabulary

The officers at each level above the local Klan unit were designated by a unique prefix: Imperial at the Empire level; Grand at the Realm level; and Great at the Province level. Thus, for instance, an Imperial Kludd would be the chaplain for the whole organization, a Grand Kludd for the Realm, Great Kludd for a Province and simply Kludd for a local Klan.

Not all offices were reproduced at each level. The Kladd, Klarogo, Klexter and Klokard were not present at the Province level, and the Kladd was not included on the Realm level. The Klazik, second vice-president, and Klonsul, attorney, positions only existed at the Imperial level. The Klaziks duties included being head of the department of Realms and organizing new Realms and Provinces At the Province level there were three Klaliffs that served as an advisory board. A Klokann of three members, each one named a Klokan, filled this role at the local levels and a Klokann of four members at the Imperial level, in which they served as a "Supreme Board of Auditors and Special Advisers and was led by a Chief Imperial Klokan.

The Imperial Wizards Genii constituted his Imperial Kloncilium; this was the Imperial Wizards supreme advisory board, as well as the Klans highest administrative organ in between Klonvokations. It met regularly every July, but could also be called when the Imperial Wizard or five Geniis petitioned him to do so. The Kloncilium was also the Supreme Tribunal of Justice of the organization with appellate jurisdiction and the right to finally determine disputes between Realms, Provinces, Klans and members in unorganized states.

Giant was adopted as an emeritus title: Imperial Giant for an ex-Imperial Wizard, Grand Giant for an ex-Grand Dragon, Great Giant for ex-Great Titan and Klan Giant for an ex-Exalted Cyclops.

A Kleagle was a recruiter and was responsible for organizing local Klans.

[adj. noun|noun] : [lib|cons]

The researchers found conservatives, more than liberals, tend to refer to things by names, instead of describing them in terms of features.

Examples of this would be saying someone is an idealist rather than describing them as idealistic, or that someone is a pessimist rather than calling them pessimistic.

If you describe someone as 'a homosexual' you're more likely to be conservative, while calling someone 'homosexual' - without the 'a' - makes you more liberal.

This use of nouns, rather than adjectives, is thought to preserve stability, familiarity and tradition, all of which appear to be valued more highly by conservatives than liberals.
