hmm. tough call. maybe that makes it too easy, since every state has a college song, or two, or twelve. on the other hand, i suspect that’s all there is for some states.

    interesting HREF, BTW :)

  2. cleek

Can we count “Gone to Carolina in my Mind”?

    nope!

Is “Mississippi Delta Blues” the name of a song as well as of a genre?

    yep

    Oklahoma, The Oregon Trail. noted.

  3. Heathen

Indiana Wants Me, I will need to look up the performer.
    Private Idaho, The B-52’s
    Nebraska, Bruce Springsteen

Also, I like “Alabama Bound” better than “Sweet Home”.

or “Stars Fell On Alabama” – it’s on their license plates !

  5. Paige

“Blue Sky” by the Allman Bros. Maybe it doesn’t count because it doesn’t specify N vs. S–but it’s surely N.

When I was in Girl Scouts we sang a song that had every state name in it. I don’t remember them all, but I do remember this:

Why did “Cali-fone-ya, why did Cali-fone…”
She called to say “Haw-wi-ya, she called to say Haw-wi-ya.”

and there was something about wearing a “new jersey.”

  6. Paige

oh yeah! an old country song has these lyrics–“i was born, in saignaw, michigan.” i don’t know who it’s by or if it’s that the title.

    maybe merle haggard?

  7. Paige

    OK–last post:

The GS song was: “What did Delaware, boys? What did Delaware?

She wore her New Jersey, boys, she wore her New Jersey.”

  8. The Modesto Kid

Paige — we sang that song too, in boy scouts or something like that — the line “What did Cunnecta cut, boys? What did Cunnecta cut?” always seemed totally ridiculous to me. And I can’t even remember what she did end up cutting!

  9. Michael Demmons

    Ok. Let’s see…

    Colorado Sunrise – Merle Haggard
The Wives are in Connecticut – Carly Simon
    Blue Hawaii – Elvis
    Maryland – Vonda Shepard
    Saginaw, Michigan
    Missing Missouri – Sarah Evans
    Moving to Montana – Zappa
Stop in Nevada – Can’t remember the artist
No One Likes New Hampshire – They Might Be Giants
    New Mexico – Billy Joel

Stopping here because I am too lazy to think more and I was missing a bunch.

Bill Staines did a song called “Sweet Wyoming Home.” If that’s too obscure an artist, I’m pretty sure there’s a John Denver song with Wyoming in the title.

Also, Slipknot did a song called “Iowa” (on the album of the same name).

Yes. I know of Bill Staines. But since you asked…. John Denver did cover Chris LeDoux’s “Song of Wyoming”. Chris has a couple of others as well.
