We All Lose

I am sick and tired of watching folks like Boris Johnson, Marine Le Pen, Donald Trump, and others appeal to the worst racial instincts of our species, only to be shushed by folks telling me that it's not really racism driving their popularity. It's economic angst. It's regular folks tired of being spurned by out-of-touch elites. It's a natural anxiety over rapid cultural change.

Maybe it's all those things. But at its core, it's the last stand of old people who have been frightened to death by cynical right-wing media empires and the demagogues who enable them—all of whom have based their appeals on racism as overt as anything we've seen in decades. It's loathsome beyond belief, and not something I thought I'd ever see in my lifetime. But that's where we are

Oh man, what a day. Went to bed thinking Remain had it in the bag, woke up to Brexit.

There just isn’t enough tea in the country to fix this.

The UK has never been so divided. We need to make this work or we’re proper fucked.

But all of this could have been avoided. When David Cameron promised a referendum it was before the 2015 election which he was not expected to win. Oops. Not only did he win but he’s had to follow through with this nonsense to placate his party. And now look where we are. I don’t know anyone who was calling for this vote beforehand. Maybe 10-15% of the population really wanted it. So, thanks DC. Instead of facing down your own party you’ve potentially fucked us for an entire generation.

I’m trying to stay as positive as possible and am hoping we’ll unite and see this through but it’s going to be messy. We’ll lose Scotland for sure, and fuck knows what will happen in N. Ireland who will have a land border with an EU member.

We’re a big economy so I’m sure we can work out deals eventually. But the country is going to remain very bitter for a long, long time.

But I don’t care much about the economics right now: it’s the vitriol on social media that breaks my heart.

Yeh. And even though many working class people voted for Brexit there is no party that actually represents them any more. So in an actual proper general election even a change of government will leave them just as fucked as ever quite frankly.

And giving a lot of angry and frustrated people access to a big red “Fuck it!” button was not the best move.
