Some of the shirts read \u201cJESSE JACKSON \u201988 \u2014 FOR PRESIDENT,\u201d while others said \u201cJESSE JACKSON \u201988 \u2014 BLESS YOU.\u201d There was even a misspelled \u201cJESS JACKSON \u201988\u201d line of tank tops for men.<\/p>\n<p>The shirt was popular with celebrities and college students alike: Rapper Moonbyul, for example, wore the shirt in the music video for her May release, \u201cIn My Room.\u201d After the Jackson shirts\u2019 initial appearance in South Korea, they quickly spread to stylish women across Asia, sold in cheap shopping markets and on e-tailers from provincial China to Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>Is the popularity of this shirt a sign of a broader Korean interest in Jesse Jackson\u2019s historic run for the Democratic nomination for president in 1988? No, says Seoul-based social media influencer and beauty blogger Han Yoo Ra: \u201cI think it\u2019s just about the design. People may be aware of the English but they don\u2019t know the deeper meaning or that it\u2019s meant to be political. The word \u2018Jesse\u2019 is just cute.
